Where Are They ?

After watching the DVD three times I was surprised to learn here that this is actually a Canadian film. But at the beginning of the movie you see they are driving a car with 1954 Georgia {U.S.A.} license plates. At first I thought they were going to another part of Georgia. But later you learn they are not in Georgia anymore- to paraphrase Dorothy in Oz.

Then you learn they are moving again, to a nearby place called Kingston. There is a Kingston, Tennessee, adjacent to Georgia. So I figured that's where they were. But there is a Kingston in Ontario I believe too. But it seems unlikely they moved to Canada since nothing is made of it.

So can anyone answer my baffled ignorance of where this family is supposed to be ??

Another trivia point. At one point the younger daughter says her artist father met her mother when he was visiting from Great Brtain and stayed. So why doesn't he have the slightest trace of a British accent?

The movie is based on an American novel by Sarah Willis. In the novel the town is in upstate New York. The movie doesn't explicitly state where they are except for perhaps the Kingston reference. I read the book and if I remember correctly the town they moved to at the end of the book is Utica (which is in NY). I guess since this is a Canadian film they decided to change the location to Canada.

I actually do hear a British accent and the actor playing the father is British.

Thank you for the explanation.
