Do the French not embalm or bury their dead people?

I was confused from the get go when the "zombies" walked out of the cemetary all clean and fresh. I understand this is fiction, but it still seems like a huge plot hole even for a zombie movie.

It's not a plot hole. It's just what happened in the world of this movie. In this movie, no one knows how or why they came back. They just did. IF somewhere in the movie it was said that they dug themselves out of a grave then it would be a plot hole. But in this world, they just showed up. It's not a conventional zombie movie. It's more of a "Twilight Zone" or "X-Files" take on the zombie issue. The unexplained is simply unexplained, and focus is put on the bigger picture of mourning issues and how people and the government deal with the strange occurances.

I'm sure they do embalm their dead, and yes they were buried. But what about autopsy? Or graphic wounds that had been fatal?

Whatever they are, they are not walking corpses. The physical evidence was that their body temperatures were a full five degrees lower then us... And yet in the final scene, we see the cadavers laid back out on the graves and they vanish...

Weird.

I thought the film would have been far more moving had the dead come out of the ground naked, rotted, and dirty. However, budgetary and decency constraints probably prevented the elderly and children in this film from being portrayed as dirty and unclothed.

Else, I'm inclined to assume that this is a "ghost" story as opposed to a zombie tale. Thus, the ghosts return in the state that they died or were burred. The ghost theme is best evidenced by sudden materialization of the "dead" and counter mechanism that just as rapidly dissolves the bodies lain upon the graves.

They represent memories. Watch it again and listen to all of the lines. It'll change the entire movie for you.

No. Actually, we eat them. 😜

I had the same problem. Did that baby dig itself out? Everyone is dressed in spring clothes. Noone has been embalmed or has scars from their death. Car accident? Cmon? In the ground for 10 years?!!! The clothes you are laid to rest in sometimes don't even have a back to them. The make up is pancake. Really couldn't watch the film. If they are ghosts…then how are they kept in a refugee camp?
