After film school, 10 years in production and a year in L.A., I have no reason to believe that this film is scripted. Was plenty of thought put into the editing stage? Of course. But the way these people behave, and the way things work around here, this is completely believable, and events unfold the way I'd expect them to in this city and industry.
What's interesting, and nobody seems to bother to discuss here, is how is networking approach eventually failed. The premise of an "ordinary guy" only worked when Herzlinger harnessed publicity, and elevated himself into a (minor) celeb - and therefore eliminated the basic element which separated him from Barrymore. Only when he has generated enough buzz, he attracted her company's attention.
Was Barrymore acting during the date? If so, it was pretty good acting. Obviously there were various factors in her agreeing to appear. I presume that once Flower Films determined the publicity would be positive, the general empathy towards the Herzlinger's approach and determination were enough to give a positive response. In this industry, charisma is HUGE - if you make the right person like you, that's (almost) all it takes.
