was that a stunt double for mr. hoffman?

does anyone really know?

reply

no one seems to know for sure. Some say it's a cut to a stunt double, some say there's some kind of a cushion implanted in the asphalt. But no one seems to know. At first I thought it was an accident and Hoffman really did fall, but now I'm kind of thinking it was staged. It's something PTA would do, I think. But I'm not sure either.
It's still quite funny though.

I'd say based upon the way the camera was setup, they were expecting him to hit the pavement, but then again I watched it pretty closely and it's tough to see how they'd use a stuntman. It wouldn't be that difficult to use trick asphalt.

reply

When I watched it I could tell that he was obviously meant to hit the pavement (they would have to be stupid to not expect it the way the mattresses were set up).

And If i can remember correctly wasn't hoffman wearing a jacket that could have covered over some padding, I couldn't really see where a cut would have been used so maybe Hoffman was just really well padded up and game enough to do it.

reply

i haven’t seen it but hearing you people talking about i think i know how they could have done it. if anyone has seen Austin powers : goldmember you will remember a scene where mini me is flung against a wall, seamlessly mini me gets up from being thrown with no camera change its amazing. it is obvious that its a dummy that was thrown because the stunt would be far to dangerous. and on the dvd it explains they used morphing software to morph the dummy on the instance it hits the ground in to the actual mini me. they could have used this to make the cut between the stunt man and Hoffman more seamless.

reply

Maybe but It would be cool if Hoffman had actually done it.

'Morphing software' we sure have come a long way since 'The Goodies'.

reply

wow way to talk out of your ass based on something you haven't seen.

I read somewhere that Hoffman was indeed covered in padding for the stunt. He was wearing it under his skin.

reply

Well, Mr. Hoffman certainly is wearing a bit of extra padding under his skin!

reply

the more i watched it the more i'm sure it was staged...right when he hits the mattresses you can see him trying to kind of pull himself off as he's bouncing.

reply

well he did have Mark Walberg actually crash a car into a light pole, without letting anyone else know... so for him to tell "mr. hoffman" to jump off the truck and onto the mattress, continuing to the pavement, isnt all that unbelievable...

reply

Hoffman did it himself. However, the fall was not intended to be that violent, and his leather jacket was the only thing protecting him from serious injury.

At least that's what I've heard. He's a method actor, right!

reply

he smashed his guitar up too, that sucks, that looked like a nice Ibanez

If you watch the commercial real close, you can see a fantastic edit - it's not Hoffman jumping off the roof. When he's on the roof, as the camera pulls out you can't make out if it's Hoffman or not (you can just see a kind of silhouette) - that's where the edit is (it's an excellent one)...and then when he lands on the ground again there's a terrific cut where Hoffman takes over for the stunt double. It's fantastic - a great piece of trickery from PTA.

reply

Unfortunately - and much to my surprise - it looks like you are correct. I zoomed in at 16x just before he falls.

I wouldn't bet my house on it, but it sure doesn't look like him...

reply

No such thing as a nice Ibazez...

Thats funny cause its true.

reply

More telling is, after he lands on the pavement, Stunt Hoffman "morphs" into Real Hoffman. His leg changes position, and more of his white T-shirt underneath shows.

Still, I'm sure Phil would have done it if PTA'd asked real nice. ;)

reply

Yeah, it truly is an exact replica of an REAL commercial that went wrong, including the dialogue after the fall. It doesn't prove that it isn't PSH or if stunt was used but it proofs that it wasn't an accident that PSH (or the stunt) falls down..
If this doesn't work,
www.5minutestolive.com/QTs2005/L&F7two.mov

go to the 5minutestolive.com and you can find a sneak preview of the Lost & Found- series, called "Mattress Man"

PTA is a genius of his own..:)

OFCOURSE IT IS STAGED YOU DORKS!
WHY ELSE WOULD THE FOUR BLONDE BROTHERS(the ones who beat up adam sandler)BE THE ONLY PEOPLE WHO RUSH TO SEE IF HE IS OKAY?
you need to think about that stuff man!

reply

I see a place for a cut before the jump, but on my phone watching YouTube, I'm not seeing the cut from stunt person back to PSH. It must be almost seemless. They also managed to avoid any scenery or sunlight, etc seeming to change at all.

pta said mr. hoffman does all his own stunts, so there you go.

reply

of course it was staged its a remake of a real comercial that went rong, and the jacket had padding in it

reply

exactly what he said above. it's true.

reply

Well I can say, 7.5 years later, that with PSH no-longer living, we may never know the answer to this.

This decades old thread of discussion will serve as a continuing reminder and effigy.
