Why did Brenda lock Nadine in the basement?
shareI just finished watching the movie on Netflix, my guess is she wanted to alienate Nadine from her daughter and have Marie as her kid.

Well, that, and control, and it seems like Nadine was used as a sex surrogate. I'm only watching this for the first time tonight, and in the first scene they show Nadine in the basement, after Brenda finishes "correcting" Nadine, she calls in her husband, and it's obvious he's using Nadine for sex. My guess is, Brenda doesn't like sex (or just doesn't like sex with her husband) and has Nadine in the basement so that he'll use Nadine rather than Brenda.
