I rented on October the 4th (and wished I hadn't - what a bunch of crap; didn't even smile once never mind laugh).

It's really bad. They should have called it, "Let David Cross Laugh at America." Cross proved himself to be quite a prima dona, making fun of club owners in the middle of his set, making fun of the *beep* club, making fun of the drunk fans, even going so far as seeking out drunks that didn't even attend his show. It's like he was trying to be Dave Attel, but instead of partying with the locals he admonished them for not being as insiteful, witty or sober as David Cross. And then there's the mindless filler material where Cross' boss reams him out for his tour. I guess corporate America is a bunch of conservative sellouts.

It's too bad, I think Cross can be a funny guy when he's amongst other funny people (I love Mr. Show, Arrested Development) but in Let America Laugh, he's just an ass.

You're dumb.

Psychos don't explode when sunlight hits them, I don't give a *beep* how crazy they are!

i agree.

reply

Yeah, i agree as well.

reply

Yup I also agree. :)

reply

Right, right. The thing is, in Let America Laugh, making fun of drunk people is all he does and there's never any wit to it. Anybody can sit there and make fun of some guy that's stone drunk. Hell, even a lazy stoned phish head can probably pull that off, though my guess is you're usually on the receiving end. And it's not the club's fault Cross couldn't get shows at better clubs. I'd be pissed if I had drunk fan boys talking through my sets and a-hole club owners, too, but the amount of junk they show in Let America Laugh is gratuitous and, for the most part, not funny. But you know what is funny? Phish covering "A Day in the Life" - it's simply amazing Phish rehearsed it and felt others would want to hear them butcher it, too.

And yeah, I love Mr. Show; it's the sharpest, funniest show to come out maybe ever. The filler that bridges the "road footage" isn't funny and doesn't resemble Mr. Show in tone or quality at all. It's not smart, it's not witty, it's not subtle - it's bloated, flat, and ultimately simple, which is why it probably appeals to a meatheads that can only retort "you are dumb" and don't mind listening to Trey Anastasio take a crap on his guitar on stage (or sing for that matter). I think Cross is hillarious most of the time, but he's funnier when collaborating with guys like Bob Oedenkirk, Brian Posehn, etc. Hell, even the Beatles couldn't pull off the same level of quality control during their solo careers. Luckily he's rebounded nicely with Arrested Development.

By the way, you do know that David Cross and Bob Oedenkirk hate hippies, don't you?

hahahaha....I hate that phish cover too. As a David Cross fan who has never seen this DVD, I am apprehensive about renting it. I have heard mixed reviews although yours is compelling. I think I'll have to find out for myself.

You are right on! How about the filler material within the video of the drunk people on the street, the dumb time-lapse photograpgy at the CD signing, etc.?

The video comes off as a sort of self-congratulatory homage to the comedian.
At the expense of people who sponsored him, hosted him, or bought tickets to see him.

This dvd is not that great but worth one watch to get it out of your system. I had the fortunate/unfortunate experience of being at the show in Dallas where the guy yells "THE SOUTH SHALL RISE AGAIN MOTHER----". The rest of the show was great, but for three minutes everyone in the place just wanted to kick that guys ass. Even though it ended up being a setup line for David, it detracted from the show. I will say that this dvd proves that the art of stand up comedy is only really observed in the LIVE performance. Regardless of this movie's lack of luster (?), it's important that appreciation for the touring standup is regained for comedy to get better. I am sick of 99% of what I see on comedy central standup shows. That's what people think standup is. If guys like David Cross and Patton Oswalt and Zach Galifianakis can't get support, even for a kind of lame dvd, then all of Bill Hicks' work goes to waste. SEE THE COMEDIANS OF COMEDY, SEE THE ARISTOCRATS, SEE JESUS IS MAGIC!!!! LONG LIVE THE MEMORY OF BILL HICKS!!!

reply

But Bill Hicks was kind of horrible.

reply

no, he was one of the funniest men ever to walk this earth.

I want to know where Comedy Central gets those audiences for their stand up specials. They laugh at every joke, applaud at all of the appropriate places, and never make a distracting noise while the comedian is talking.
