Escaping The Coffin?

Is that possible, especially when she's lying down and has a lot of dirt pouring down on her?

Perhaps Mythbusters did a segment on that.

reply

No, it wouldn't be possible. Even if you could break the coffin (very unlikely), you'd suffocate as the dirt fell on top of you.

Only scene I don't really get. It's cool it relates back to her training.. But I couldn't tell what was going on when the dirt fell.

reply

Who knows. Maybe she tried to punch through the soil as they came down. Lol

reply

Yeah, standing on top of a sword on the other hand, totally possible.

reply

Loved how that scene played out, with her walking into the diner and asking for a glass of water.

reply

Yeah it want realistic, but it was still a great scene lol

I read somewhere(wish I could remember where)that someone with patience and great lung capacity could actually pull it off at a freshly dug grave. Time and weight from rain, walking on the site and whatnot pack the dirt in more tightly, so it helped that she dug her way out almost as soon as she was buried. Dunno about the ability to punch thru the wood, but had she hyperventilated before taking a deep breath, she could hold her breath longer. I read this is an old swimmers trick. Like I said, don't quote me on any of this, I can't remember where I read it or if whoever wrote it was telling the truth or not.

My favorite part of this scene is before burial.

As the Bride awaits her fate, we see a coffin above ground,
askew on it's side.
The light from a grave-diggers flashlight creates a shadow in the coffin.
The claw-like hand of the corpse is curled, creating a shadow-puppet,
of a rabbit,
on the back of the coffin.
That little touch relieved my tension..
just a tad..

Just enough to make it through the rest of the burial escape..
My lungs sympathized, and I had to sit up straight and take a few deep breaths.
Fun how that works..

The weight of the soil would have crushed her.

reply

I love the scene, but it would not be possible. A cubic meter of soil weighs between 2.6 to 3.7 US tons depending on moisture content and how compacted it is. Even assuming the low end of the scale the wooden coffin likely would have crushed under the weight. She was buried deep enough to require a ladder for Bud's friend to climb out of the grave, so probably close to 6 feet deep, coffin about 6 feet long by 2 feet wide adds up to a tremendous amount of weight on a cheap wood box.

reply

The scene kept me from enjoying any of the movie. I understand that artistry and symbolism of the whole thing, but all they had to do was put her in a shallow grave and I would have fine with it.

reply

With a shallow grave and loosely-packed soil, maybe. I certainly wouldn't want to test the theory.

reply

Oh they definitely did a segment on the coffin escape scene. They busted every aspect of it.

reply

They busted the experiment, so it's not valid. They didn't use enough soil, the robotic hand was too soft and badly attached, the robot didn't punch deep enough (never 'through', only 'at the board', which is a no-no in martial arts psychology - you punch THROUGH the target, damnit), it didn't vary the places where it punched, utilizing the already emerging cracks, etc.

I didn't see the second part, but they botched so much in the first part, why bother.

Not to say it's possible, but I would very much like to know the mechanics of digging upwards from a small area and displacing all the soil - how do you even DIG in that situation without just making sure your face is full of soil and then you die? How? I would like to see diagrams and proper explanations as to how this could even be possible in theory.

reply

They used 6 feet of normal soil, they used a robotic hand made of ballistics gel (which behaves similar to human flesh), they had a real MMA fighter punch as well, but please remember that even he couldn't punch hard enough to break the wood. Not to mention that when they did the 6-foot dirt part, Tori proved that even if a hole could have been punched through the coffin, the Bride would have suffocated from dirt pouring over her nose and mouth, if she hadn't already suffocated from the time she wasted breaking the wood with strength she didn't have.

Keep in mind the Quentin Tarantino doesn't use logic or science in his movies. It's all about drama and shock value.

very little of the "cool" stuff in this film would be possible

woman comes out of coma, learns to walk in a week, full reflexed assassin in 2 weeks
woman beats 88 men with swords?

but its supposed to be like cheesy kung fu movies, so i ignore all that

reply

What I've heard from 'coma wakening', is that everyone is extremely weak when they wake up, can only stay awake for maybe a couple of minutes at a time, and keep swimming in an out for a very long time.

For them to gain full command of all their limbs and muscles would not even be enough, since those muscles haven't been trained for a long time, so it would take months, maybe years to even be able to run normally.

Don't quote me on that, I am sure it varies per individual. But it should've taken her at least days, if not weeks, to be able to even start moving around.
