The Attention is at the "Passion" boards

no one seemed to make a big deal out of Gospel Of John
when it was released.

why are they making such a big 'fuss' out of Passion then?

Essentially, aren't these 2 movies (and countless others)
the same story, just told differently?

Why was this the only Jesus film not to get bashed?
was it that 'true to scriptures' that no
religious leaders had a problem with it?
i seriously doubt that.....

That, and the fact that Mel Gibson made it and it's the most graphic depiction of Christ's death ever to be brought to the screen.

marcin_kukuczka,

I have to disagree. I found THE GOSPEL OF JOHN to be FAR more moving and beautiful than THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST. In fact, I was completely turned off by the later film. No, it doesn't evangelize (it barely touches on Christ's message at all), but instead it presents a myopic distortion of the story that depicts Christ as nothing more than a victim/martyr. Before you jump down my throat for that satement, let me say that I think that what we have here is not so much a case of good film vs. bad film, but rather of two views of Christianity colliding. On one hand, there is "doom and gloom"(represented by THE PASSION), focusing on the suffering of Christ and his DEATH, and humanity's constant struggle with sin; then there is joyous celebration of Christ's offer of forgiveness of sins, the message that he preached throughout his LIFE, and focusing on his RESURECTION (represented by THE GOSPEL OF JOHN). It all comes down to personal beliefs, but I for one prefer to focus my energy on spreading the message of God's love and forgiveness rather than trying to scare everyone into repentance.

Oh, and the reason THE PASSION is getting more notice than THE GOSPEL OF JOHN is because it has a far bigger publicity machine behind it. Pure and simple.

I don't think the Passion is attempting to "sacre" anyone into repentance. You just pointed out that it doesn't evangelize Jesus' mission very much, so in what context is it going to make people repent?

Anyway, regarding the ambiguity surrounding John's Gospel, I've read from various sources, most of which actually disagree. It is the general consensus that John was written considerably later than the other gospels, because it appears to be more developed in both prose and theology. Howeever, the John Gospel contains many striking details not found in the other three, as well as language and sayings that are remarkably similar to what was found in the Dead Sea Scrolls (also Jewish, also dating back to around the time of Christ). So ultimately, I guess the jury is still hung.

The Bible is not for entertainment so any biblical 'movie' is gonna be highly flawed because there is ALWAYS money involved. If you want to see the truth then read the book.

If the devil came to you and said "I shall make a movie about what really happened! Will you come to see it?"

And then they made Passion of Christ.

In the words of Charlie Brown...........GOOD GRIEF!!

Exactly!
Take out the horrific violence and blood of Passion of the Christ and that equals little or no money for the movie.
I've never seen so many people from various walks of life line up for a movie about Jesus or any other bible based movie!

We would all have to admit the obvious that about 90% of the people who saw the film was enticed by media coverage and the controversy. Otherwise, those same people would have supported "The Gospel of John" or "Luther" which came out around the same time frame as Passion.

No one was going to see a story about Jesus, they were going to see a movie about a man getting tortured and nailed to a piece of wood!
That's IT!

How else does a movie in a language other than english with english subtitles survive in America? Most people will barely stop to read a traffic sign or basic instructions but yet millions flooded the theatres to read this movie.

Mel Gibson went way over the top with the whipping post scene.
Jesus would have never survived Gibson's version. He wouldn't have had
the chance to even carry the cross!

My recommendation is that if you want to see a movie about Jesus, the Gospel of John is one of the best I've seen. The portrayal of Jesus was intense but with a sense of passion and kindness.
Henry Ian Cusick is the best Jesus I've seen on screen!

If you want to watch a blood bath and only a little to do with Jesus himself, watch Passion.

I liked the Gospel of John better becasue it was more acurateto the scriptures.

I liked Mel's Passion and I appreciate his effort. It did also help me grow closer to Christ but I still like Gospel of John Better.
