No Chemistry

And that about sums it up. There was absolutely ZERO chemistry between the characters. Add that to the acting level of a fourth grade Christmas pagent and Mr. Simon's over-rated re-write, and there you have it...

A flop.

I do have to agree that there was no chemistry. and jeff daniels was not good in his role, he was missing something.

I know! And not to mention that both actors were way too old. Jeff Daniels is in his 50s! How are we supposed to believe he's a struggling young actor? Boy, they really weren't thinking on this one. Leave the originals alone please...

You haven't seen the original then - although Marsha Mason and Richard Dreyfuss were actually younger than Patricia Heaton and Jeff Daniels, they looked 10 years older (Heaton looks pretty good for a 47yr. old - a nice inspiration for women over 25 ;)

I happened to see this film just yesterday here in Australia on cable. Dont get me wrong I adore Jeff Daniels in just about everything he does. Having said that I did not enjoy one minute of the movie. Jeff just seemed really self conscious trying to fill Richard Dreyfus shoes, he seemed to be rushing his lines to get them over and done with. Patricia Heaton just wasnt convincing at all, no personality in her performance and it boggles the mind why jeffs character would be attracted to such a whining harpie. Ms Mason and Mr Dreyfus were engrossing in the original , they had chemistry and you believed the characters, felt for them and enjoyed them. THis one however just didnt work, rushed, boring and not good . Both can do better

reply

I can't believe that Patricia Heaton didn't make the slightest effort to get out of the Debra Barone (Ray's wife) shell. Maybe she can't.

As for Jeff - who is not a bad actor at all - you are right, he was intimidated that he had to fill Richard Dreifus shoes.

This re-make shouldn't have been made.

No chemistry? Spot on.

AMDG

I agree that there was no chemistry.

I also had trouble believing that any man could have fallen in love with such a consistently nagging shrew like that. The tagline is "Love at first fight," I know, but there was something really wrong about how both Daniels and Heaton played their characters.

reply

Right, something was missing in their relationship. Actually, the character who saved this movie from being a total failure was the girl (Lucy).

I didn't mind this, i actually thought their chemistry topped that of a lot of lead actors in movies these days. Heaton is awesome, but then I haven't ever seen 'Everybody Loves Raymond' (They don't rlly broadcast it in the uk) so i wouldn't know about how far she moved from her previous protrayal.
As an avid watcher of mindless fluff, this comes up pretty high on my list of romantic comedies.
