It's an example of how out-dated this movie is in 2004.

In 1977, it was still considered very kooky to do things like meditate. Of course, now, everybody's into yoga and herbs and all that stuff. The character of Elliot was *supposed* to be very avant-garde (for 1977). The simple fact that they were living together was still fairly on-the-edge, as it were in 1977, but now, it's par for the course.

You're right: I was at first confused by the "blood tests" line at first. I'm thinking, "Shouldn't they have checked each other's HIV status *before* they hopped in the sack?" Then it dawned on me: The "blood tests" line is a reference to the olden days (some states may still require it) when you had to get a blood test before you could get a marriage license. In essence, Elliot is asking her to marry him. Ergo, she screams.

Like I said: The movie is horribly out of date. Why the heck is he always calling from a payphone? They had to explain that his cell phone broke, otherwise, it would have made no sense in this era. What's the deal with the Japanese car dealers not speaking English? Again, that would have made sense in 1977 when the Toyota first hit it big in the US. But in this day and age, Japanese businessmen are very well acquainted with the English language. They would have know how to say "you're fired." In 1977, it's possible to be mugged by unarmed punks. In 2004, no way is anyone going to chase after them, because they probably have guns!

You won't believe this: but I did like the movie. It just worked better in the last millennium.

Keen observation. I might add though that not ALL Japanese car dealers speak english well. My uncle works for one. I think he only understands hello and good bye. Idk. oh well

Blood Test = Marriage Proposal. you and your fiance have to take a bllo test befor you can be legaly married in order to prove that you are not related to each other. Therefore, when he says that he wants to go for blood tests with her his meaning is that he wants to get the tests doen so that they can get married. So obviously the reason she is so excited is because he is asking her to marry him.

Blood tests before marriage started in the 1930's to look for venereal diseases that were communicable - at the time specifically syphilis.

Some states still require them, but as with all politically correct things, they are for the most part useless now.

They should be mandatory to look for all major STD's including HIV - it is time to treat that as a disease and not a stigma so that it can be diagnosed and treated.

Most STD's are treatable and many of the deaths and severe complications occur in those who did not know that they were infected.

TB was controlled in part by forcing people that were thought to be unreliable to go to state hospitals for initiation of treatment SO THEY WOULD NOT INFECT OTHERS.

People do not have the RIGHT to spread disease either knowingly or unknowingly. This is a specific job of government under provide for the common good.

This was also used to screen for other diseases such as Sickle cell to provide info regarding future children.

Blood tests started before DNA was discovered, let alone techniques to check for relatedness.
