Not a patch on the original

Just watch Marsha Mason again in the original to confirm what a dull, untalented actress Patricia Heaton is. Times that by 100 when watching Richard Dreyfuss (though Jeff Daniels can be good in some things; he's totally miscast here. Every other actor in town probably knew better than to remake Elliot Garfield).

One is even reminded what a treasure Quinn Cummings was in the original when compared to the listless moppet they've cast here.

Pointless with dull edges.

I know what you mean, but you have to remember the part was - literally - written for Marsha Mason who was Mrs. Neil Simon at the time. I'm not knocking Patricia Heaton - I love her in Raymond - and it takes a very brave person to remake almost word for word a part that is owned by someone else. All watching this remake made me want to do though is watch the original again. Jeff Bridges spent most of the film playing Richard Dreyfuss, which was a shame. A remake of the essence of the Goodbye Girl may have worked better rather than a copycat of the original. It was good to be able to recite the script practically verbatem though!!!!!

Part of the challenge is that the words between the 1977 and 2004 versions were almost the same. Not every actor is up to making same role their own.

But I guess Shakespearean actors do it every day of the week.

No two persons ever watch the same movie.
