Damn, did I spot all the references?

Well, after Never Let Me Go, I needed some light relief. Supremely silly, but great fun. Best gnome movie since Amelie.

Now, I'm sure I picked up only a few of the references to other movies and other Shakespeare plays.

Can others help out here?

Films: Brokeback Mountain, The Graduate, Rebel without a Cause, American Beauty...

Plays: Hamlet (door numbers), Macbeth (the old dog joke)...

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern was on the moving truck.

I spotted a few and i'll try and remeber the others later but for now i'll add that when the flamingo's were dancing it was a nod to Dirty Dancing with the moves they were doing.

The topiary that Paris makes for Juliet is the famous dance pose from "Dirty Dancing" too!

Don't forget Borat (the way the one gnome wore his bathing suit).

I like using spoilers.

Don't forget Forrest Gump
"I may not be a smart gnome, but I know what love is"

reply

It was actually the bird that said it, so "I may not be a smart bird, but I know what love is." But yeah, another Forrest Gump reference was when Juliet shouted "Run, Gnomeo! Run!"

Some Shakespeare references I noticed:
- The glue label read "Taming of the Glue"
- The mushroom's name was "Shrew"
- Somewhere I saw "Stratford-Upon-Avon" (birthplace of Shakespeare)
- The moving truck

I didn't notice these, but someone mentioned that...
- It takes place on Verona drive
- There is a company called "Temptest Teapots"

Stratford-on-Avon was on a bus

reply

I think it was set in Stratford, because of the Shakespeare statue in the park and the few street scenes really looked like it.

Two I noticed were Juliet: "Out! Out!" Neighbor: "Damn Spot!" when the dog scares her.
And I thought they were imitating the Power Thirst ads on Youtube for the Terrafirminator.

I thought the Mushroom's name was 'Shroom, not Shrew. It didn't act very shrewish, so if it was Shrew, it was a really lame joke.

reply

Yeah, I think you're right, it's 'Shroom. I had thought of it after I posted, but never edited my post.

It also referenced Grease with the ending where everyone danced in couples in a line opening up to reveal Gnomeo and Juliet on the lawnmower.

I think the part where Gnoemo falls into the water during the battle was supposed to be a reference to the opening of Saving Private Ryan.

I thought the mushroom's name was "Schroom"

Actually, the mushroom's name is "Shroom" :-)

Can someone please explain to to me what the Brokeback Mountain reference was because I saw the movie but I can't seem to recall it. Thanks.

The street numbers of the two houses are "2B" and "2B" with a slash over it. in other words, "2B and Not 2B".

reply

No, it's "2B OR not 2B".

One thing I noticed is during the balcony/pedestal scene they eventually make their way to the pool. Juliet (and nurse) even hide Gnomeo in it when a red gnome passes. I wondered if it was a nod to Laz Buhrman's ROMEO + JULIET. In that version, the balcony scene takes place in a swimming pool instead, and at one point Juliet pushes Romeo down when a guard walks by.
