Gigot remake? Does'nt even come close!

As much as I love William Macy as an actor, I'm sorry to say that this is one remake that never should've been made. Right from the getgo this movie is a major dissappointment, mainly because he completely lacks the pathos, the comedic timing and the dazzling pantomime of Jackie Gleason. Again, this is not a diss on Macy and his formidable talents...it's just that Gleason was so very wonderful in the original that noone and I mean NOONE could possibly measure up. Though never officially released on vhs or dvd, "Gigot" pops up on Fox Movie Channel every now and again, as well as at the link listed below:

Believe me, you'll be absolutely amazed at Gleason's performance...not only did he manage to convey an astounding array of emotions without uttering a word of dialogue, he also co-wrote the script as well as the music. Oh, did I mention that it was directed by Gene Kelly? Please see this film whenever the chance arises.......you won't be dissappointed.

Thank you! I was wondering when I learned about this "re-make" (more like a adaptation, sounds like) how it would compare to "Gigot", which is an enthralling movie. Based on the majority of comments on this message board, it seems that most people did not even know about the original (too young, maybe?)

If you think "The Wool Cap" is wonderful, you should see the original. Maxeythecat is dead on in his description. I saw it over 35 years ago as a little girl, and I think it's one of those movies that leaves a lasting mark on your soul.

I was just reminded when I looked up "Gigot" on IMDB that Jackie Gleason not only starred in it, but he wrote the original story AND composed the score for the film. What a talented man! If you think Honeymooners was his best work, you need to see this movie.

There's actually only one other person who could have done this and done it right. Unfortunately, he's dead as well. That would be Jonathan Winters. He has the right comedic timing and he is a master at doing comedy with various items. The other person who is a mime in himself would be Robin Williams. He too is now dead. So I don't know anyone else who could pull this off as well as Jackie Gleason did back in 1962 'Gigot". Both Jonathan & Robin are excellent at making facial expressions. This is really the wrong part for William Macy.

I agree with you 100%, that Jackie Gleason is absolutely extrodinaire in this film. The fact that he wrote the script and music, just makes this film even more special. I would say watch The Wool Cap first and then watch Gigot and see the huge difference and how a master actor does it right. Nothing again William H. Macy, as he was excellent in Fargo & The Cooler.
