I just read on AWN.com that they are planning to release it on DVD in 2004 but no exact date has been set. It is going to be part of a making of. The article was really short but you can read it on the site still by searching for the movie, its the first link.
Thank you for the information. I was concerned that Disney/Eisner would not release it because Roy was involved (if you wonder what that has to do with it visit http://www.savedisney.com)
Michael Eisner has really had it in for him, and I was seriously concerned the non-release of Destino would be payback time, just as the lack of publicity for Fantasia 2000 was.
Destino premiered on June 2, 2003 at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival in Paris. The five-minute short follows a female dancer as she dances through surreal scenery inspired by DalĂ's paintings.
The short was very well received; it won many awards and was nominated for a 2003 Academy Award for Animated Short Film.
It is scheduled to be released on DVD in early 2005. (at least that's what me sources are saying)
I saw the DVD version of Destino on board a Carnival Cruise Ship on 9/8/2006. However it contained an intro by Roy Disney. In order for me to buy the DVD, I would have had to also buy 6 framed prints by Dali for $11,000. The price of the prints was way out of reach for me and I thought that the price for the collection was too high. ($7K - $8K probably would be ok for a collector of Dali). I have not been able to find the DVD elsewhere. If I do, I will let you know.
Well at least now there is hope again. I finally get to own the Little Matchstick Girl because of the extended Little Mermaid that has just come out. Please keep a keen eye out for Destino.
I have just contacted someone at disney about the release date for destino and here is what the email said: ______________________________________________________________________________

HI My name is Julia Saienni and I am an avid fan of both Disney and Salvador dali and I was just wondering if Disney studios was actually going to put this on dvd anytime soon, or if it already is? I have seen the short film at the Philadelphia museum of art and I absolutely love it. I would appreciate your time in contacting me back about this matter.

Dear Julia,
There are some rather ambitious plans to release "Destino" on DVD in '07. A feature length documentary on the making of the short is being prepared by a top documentarian and they are working on it as we speak. No firm release date yet, but it is coming. "Destino" impresses, amazes and amuses me everytime I see it.
I was lucky seeing Destino in Monaco, in August 2005. I'm also looking forward buying the DVD. Don't forget to announce its release! Dali's mind was amazing, and the movie is just fantastic!
In the four sets of DISNEY'S TRUE LIFE ADVENTURES that came out in December, it was announced that DESTINO will be one of three sets of special releases in 2007. (I think the sets are under the banner STORIES AND MAGIC, or something along those lines.)
Well, the DISNEYLAND SECRETS, STORIES & MAGIC disk is one of three sets due out next Tuesday (Dec 11), but apparently DESTINO will not be included, after all.
The Walt Disney Co. plans to release Destino, a film that began as a 1946 collaboration between Disney and surrealist Salvador Dali and completed in 2003 under the supervision of Walt's nephew, Roy E. Disney. Disney said that it expects to release the film as part of a two-disc "Walt Disney Treasures" set on November 11, 2008. The set will also include a feature-length documentary describing how the partnership between Disney and Dali developed. Another feature included in the package will be a short entitled "The Disney That Almost Was," about Disney projects that never came to full fruition.
Glad to hear about the November 2008 DVD of DESTINO. In addition to that Treasure Tin release, there will be two more (including DR. SYN/THE SCARECROW OF ROMNEY MARSH. It's slated to have both the mini-series and theatrical versions of that title.)
Yes, I was hoping the supplemental films would be purchase-worthy on their own! I just hope they're really polished, info-packed, and imaginificationally entertaining. =P
Walt Disney Treasures DVD - Wave VIII - Destino, Donald, and Dr Syn by John Frost
Disney has announced three new Walt Disney Treasures DVD volumes from the Disney Vault featuring never-before-seen material. "Destino", "Chronological Donald, Volume 4", "Dr Syn, Alias the Scarecrow" will make up the eighth installment of the popular series. Noted film historian, author and critic Leonard Maltin hosts each DVD.
I purchased the DVD of DESTINO today at The Dali Museum Store at One Dali Blvd., St. Petersburg, Florida 33701. It contains the film and the documentary "Dali and Disney: A Date with Destiny." The price in the store is $26.00.
Alternatively, both the film and the documentary are bonus features on the Disney Blu-Ray/DVD release of FANTASIA/FANTASIA 2000. They are on the FANTASIA 2000 Blu-Ray.
