Owen's answer to question 2!

When asked, "Do you believe in God" by Dodd, Owen answers:

"What kind of God would do this to people?"

I don't know if this was already brought up so if it was don't get angry, but that statement makes me so furious! What makes him think he is so damn important that any God would waste time making him go through those trials? Does he really think that any God would have nothing better to do with its time than make one human being be tortured, as horrible as that was.

What kind of God would give people cancer?
What kind of God would give people AIDS?
What kind of God would let innocent people die from plane accidents or shootings or anything else that is equally horrible?

I just get a problem when people blame gods for horrific misfortune because it happens regardless of whether or not there is any god at all.

Does any one else think that way?

PS. don't hate on me for having an opinion :/

I think that kind of what owen meant, when asked if he believed in god and he replies "what kind of god would do this to people?" i dont think hes blaiming god, i dont really know how to explain it, its almost like hes putting forward a viable reason as to there not being a god, or almost a crisis of faith in his life at the point that he knows or at least thinks that his life will end. I think most of it is the fact that he's scared, i really dont know how to explain it, but i really dont think that hes blaming god for his predicament.
P.S i dont hate you for your opinion LOL i think its a valued observation, and interpreted the way that you have interpreted it i would feel exactly the same :)

reply

Aww, you're being modest. Clearly you "know how to explain it" :)
Oh! And I agree. And, as far as the question goes, I think you get the torch either way. But yes, god has nothing to do with it.
It's intriguing to imagine what could be learned about/from human behavior if one removes ethics/morals/good taste from an experiment's variables.
All that being said, outside the idiom which is Jax I'd like to know more about HIS story, wouldn't you?

reply

yeah asking "What kind of God would do this to people?" is crazzzzzzzzzzzzy
but saying "god works in mysterious ways" now that's some ironclad reasoning

reply

lol @ religious hypocrisy!!

reply

That's exactly the point of the question. Either God doesn't exist and the people believing they are doing his work are psychotic, These people are not doing God's will and are psychotic, or God is cruel and much like a child frying ants with a magnifying glass. If all results have equal weight there is a 66.66% chance people are crazy.

I still haven't figured it out but I'm leaning towards option 2.

The dilemma in your statement is named Theodicy.
If God wants to stop evil (for example the things you named) but can't, he is not omnipotent (and therefore not God).
If God is able to stop evil but does not want to, he is not good.
If God is neither able to nor wants to stop evil, .... well too bad :) (that's actually not part of the definition :) but you get the idea)
If God is able to stop evil and wants to ... then why doesn't he ?

This world is a temporary one, and a test. We have to show patience when in trouble, and to help others when we can. In the end, it all comes to what we do with what we have.

By the way, i'm not Christian, please critisize in light of this.

Cheers

How many of you believe in telekinesis? Raise my hands.

How old are you, really? Your post has "Oh look i know something smart so i'm gonna repeat it even though i don't really get it!" written all over it.

"If God is able to stop evil but does not want to, he is not good."
False. People have to make their own decisions.

reply

And your post has "Oh look i dont understand so im gonna act like i really know all the answers maybe ill fool them!" written all over it.

God's a dick and a half.

You are invoking David Hume's Theodicy:

Is he willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then is he impotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then is he malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Whence then is evil?

One of history's greatest quotes!

reply

Hm... seems that if he's able and willing, then that only leaves one answer.

He's not paying attention.

One might as well blame Jody Foster for the attempted assassination of President Reagan.

All you need to shut these THC-addled *beep* up is a well-timed, "At what point did the universe (and therefore G*d's focus) start revolving around you?"

Be prepared for a lot of hemming and hawing, followed by them racing off to cry in some Richard Dawkins screed.

reply

Well, if your god's focus doesn't revolve around you, then why do you pray? Do you think he's going to change his plans just because you asked?

reply

THC-addled? Are you high?

I agree completely with your comments, however, I think you missed the point of what he meant - he was stating that he does not believe in god.

reply

I think you completly missed the point.

Owen doesn't blame god for what is happening to him, because he doesn't believe there is a god to begin with.
It would have probably been more fitting if he said:
"What kind of a God would just watch and do nothing while People are doing this to each other?"

Beeing an omnipotent and omniscient beeing that God is supposed to be, he could have stopped all that cruel stuff in the cube in an instant.

Some people will try to answer this question by telling you that God can't interfere and help because that would compromise our free will and God therefor has to let us choose to do evil things without stopping us.

A cheap cop out if you ask me.
If a SWAT team shoots some guy who is on a Killing Spree no one is complaining that SWAT interfered with this guys free willed decision to go and run Amok.
So why doesn't God stop people who run Amok? Either he doesn't care or he doesn't exist.

reply

yea, your SWAT sentence is undoubtely logical, despite the fact this discussion isn't about the existence of god or not.

reply

Agreed, Dr-Wieselkopp.

I'd be a crispy critter, too, as I would have phrased it that way.

"What kind of God would sit idly by and allow this to happen?"

And I'm gonna stop at that point, 'cuz I really don't want to delve into a theological discussion.

Scary.
