Neither compares to the original Cube. Cube Zero is terrible. Just terrible. This is a total hack job.
Cube Zero is an uninventive concept of what the story behind the cube might be. That is not the purpose of what a prequel to such a movie should be. A prequel traditionally connects storylines (as the way sequels continue them). Unfortunately the original Cube had no storylines to really connect, except for perhaps Kazan.
But it seems his storyline ISN'T CONNECTED. I don't care what anyone says. Wynn is not Kazan and nothing about that is connected. It is a half-assed, half-baked, lazy, dumb, and ridiculous way of trying to explain something that doesn't require explanation. Kazan was autistic (or something close to it).
I hated this movie. I hated the way it dealt with everything close to the concept of the Cube, from the characters inside, to the dreadful play between Wynn and Dodd outside of it. The mystique of the original Cube is what makes it great. So it turns out there are two bone-heads watching from some security room "upstairs"? That's really clever. REALLY creative stuff. I wonder how Ernie came up with such an "out there" idea. People watching us? From ABOVE?? Oh I'll just write an 90 script about two guys having expositional conversations about nothing in a cheap looking set that is supposed to be a futuristic security monitoring facility. That's excellent.
Maybe I can get my brain wiped by the totalitarian government too so that I won't have to remember the 97 minutes I wasted looking at this complete piece of garbage. Vincento Natali's great work on "Cube" has been essentially ruined for me. The mystique, the grandeur, and the aura of the cube that made me interested in this "series" is not just abandoned in this horrible film. It is completely obliterated.
