Gongoozlers?

I just watched the episode entitled Gongoozlers. It looked like Felicity Kendall was temporarily written out of the episode deliberately. Does anyone know if she really was injured or had to leave the set for a while for some reason, during filming?

reply

Yes I thought that, though I think the idea was to have her out from the get-go when writing it. My only thought is that it was to give Quinnie extra exposure as she pretty much replaced Rosemary and was quite good at the same time.

Thanks for the response. That is puzzling. I thought the same about Quinnie as well. Toward the end of the episode, it seemed like she had been Laura's partner all along.

I thought it was perhaps a trial to see how she would work on the show if one of the main left.

Something must have happened behind the scenes at this juncture. After this, Rosemary seems to have been written as sidekick to Laura, and there are many times when Felicity just stares blankly, as though she really didn't care anymore. In the third series, she regains some of her original enthusisasm, but Laura remains the primary character (except for the eps filmed overseas).

In Gongoozlers, Quinnie just seems ill-at-ease the whole time. She doesn't seem to know where to put her arms, ever, and they have her in clothes that make her look emaciated. I just want to shake her and tell her that the interview is over and she has got the job, so relax! I usually miss half the story line when she is on-screen, she makes me so nervous.

As I said, something must have happened for them to bring in a possible replacement for Rosemary. Fortunately, that didn't happen in future episodes; but I wonder if this was the beginning of the end of the series, with hard feelings all around. Worked out great for the Laura character, though.

Some interesting answers here.

This episode aired in Australia last night, I don't know if that was for the first time.

I thought Belinda Laing did quite a good fill in role, but it was strange to see Felicity Kendall sidelined in her own show. One of the comments above suggests that this may have been the beginning of the end for her, but then she made a come back. Very odd, and I would really like to know the logic behind this.

Oh gosh, I vaguely recall reading about this years ago. IIRC, the script was written with Belinda Lang’s character, Quinnie, falling and being injured, at which point Rosemary is wangled into filling in for her because of the pressing deadline and financial issues. But then Kendall had a scheduling conflict, which could not be accommodated due to so much filming for s2 taking place in Europe that year. So they just reworked the script with Rosemary falling and Quinnie stepping into her role in the investigations.
