Too much time on my hands

What exactly is the essence of time?

I understand the limitations of this question, so let me explain what I mean.

M-Theory says it is mathmatically attractive that there are 11 dimensions, encompassing the 3 we can negotiate (width, height, depth) and one we "experience" - time. If dimensions exist above our "home 4", then the hyptothesis is understood that time can be negotiated on these higher plains, as much as we can negotiate 3 dimensions.

(Side question - are dimensions like a spectrum and we merely operate within a section of that spectrum?)

Now space has matter, and has vacuums of nothingness. Is there educated conjecture on the substance of "time" - it's own vacuums, its own ways of how to negotiate it, where time is applied and when it is not?

Is time itself just another anamolous membrane genereated by chance? What does String Theory, M-Theory, and other string theories have to say about time?

i allways picture the dimension of time as a line. Picture a 3 dimensional graph with 3 axis (x,y,z) now picture those axis going up as time passes. How much time does time take to happen? Its kinda confusing, but if you think about it like this might be easyer: How much is the resolution of the universe (like on you monitor 1024 pixel x 768 ; 1^-10000000000000000000000000000000 strings x ???) , how much time does the smalest parcel of time take to happen, we named seconds and miliseconds, but that is not something universaly understood, like if you ask an alien about how much minutes does an hour take he'll probably say "f you" so, hell, i'm confused. @ M theory i don't think it says anything about time slices, just about slices of space-time that we might not be sensible to, otherwise those other slices would colide with our universe.

Your guess is as good as any. Time is a dimension, but, like the other dimensions, it, in and of itself, as no real physical elements. The other dimensions area measures of physical existence. They aren't real "things" as such. So it is with TIME.
