The facts of this case were covered in Jon Krakauer's book about Pat Tillman, "Where Men Win Glory."
The mission included 1,000 soldiers and Marines and was orchestrated by the White House, which even delayed the rescue 24 hours in order to get a combat camera video crew there to cover it.
A total of 18 Marines died in Nasiriyah in the early part of the rescue operation, 17 of whom were friendly fire victims of A-10 attacks on their column.
The military and the White House lied about everything, just as they lied about the killing of Tillman about a year later in Afghanistan.
