Claire

I could not stand Claire. She was so patronizing, she kept calling Catherine sweetie and honey. It was driving me up the wall.

Find out who you are and do it on purpose.

I felt the same way about her, but as the movie progressed, I realized that was her way of trying to control the uncontrollable. She obviously wasn't very good at it. At the end, she just seemed pathetically out of her league. How else would a member of that family behave? She was entirely believable, although irritating.

I really liked her, Hope Davis. She was very controlling, true, but she loved her sister and she was trying to cope with the situation the only way she knows how. It was OK with me too that she doubted the proof's authorship. It's realistic.

And wasn't it funny during the scene where Catherine was thinking that Claire was doubting the existence of Harold Dobbs where Hal suddenly shows up, and then Catherine goes on a tirade:

"I really don't need this, Claire. I'm fine, you know, I'm totally fine, and then you show up here with these questions like "Are you ok?" with that soothing tone of voice and "Oh, the poor policemen", I mean, I think the policemen can handle themselves. And bagels and bananas and jojuba, and "Come to New York!" and vegetarian chili?! I mean, it really pisses me off, so just save it!"

And then Claire smiles at Hal and shakes hands with him, saying, "Nice too meet you" (I think) like she just didn't get bashed by Catherine.

But she was the one who worked hard to pay off the house. She was the financially responsible person in the family.
