Would "Mean Girls" have been better w/ an R-Rating!?

http://screenrant.com/movies-would-have-been-better-rated-R-trivia/?view=all

Nobody saw Mean Girls coming. The mega-hit — starring rising starlet Lindsay Lohan as well as other future stars like Rachel McAdams and Amanda Seyfried, among others — was a bolt out of the blue. Tina Fey originally wrote it as an R-rated love letter to the teen-sex comedies of the 1980s, and several scenes in the movie still hint towards this. When Lindsay Lohan was cast, the movie was retooled towards a PG-13 rating, in part to her then squeaky-clean image as a wholesome all-American girl.

Some scenes had to be dubbed over, or changed altogether to reflect the rating. One scene originally had Regina (McAdams) topless and having her breasts fondled by Aaron (Jonathan Bennett). This scene was watered down to them simply kissing. Another scene originally had Karen (Seyfried) topless while giving a weather report (due to her belief that her breasts could predict the weather). Other scenes were merely dubbed over, with lines like “Have you had your cherry popped?” replaced with “Have you had your muffin buttered?” which explains why in certain scenes actors’ lip movements don’t correspond with their voices.

While the PG-13 rating didn’t hurt the critical or commercial appeal of Mean Girls, a sexier, more in-your-face version could have been at least equally appealing.

No, I think the restraint is what makes it So funny and a great film. Comedy films today should learn from this film.

I dont think so.

We would have alienated the target audience. Even the first draft was to me, PG-13. The MPAA would have freaked out over it.

If you watch the movie, Amber's dialog was dubbed in. The line "she masturbated with a hot dog" almost made the cut.

Damien smoked, there was 1 f-word, Karen was much more of a sex pot. Regina had a great line that was cut.

I would have hoped that we would have gotten an unrated version, but we had to keep it PG-13. We wouldn't have made anywhere near as much ticket sales and from marketing, a movie called "Mean Girls" rated R would have kind of shine a bad light on the movie.

Were you involved with the making of the film?

reply

Yes. I'm on the cast list. This was the first movie I had a part of, so I learned as much as I could. It was a joy and I'm glad the film earned a cult classic sway, we had a modest budget of $17 million. When we were #1 at the box office for May, it was HUGE.

Over 10 years later, I still get comments and asked about the film. Jonathan Bennett lives not far from me off Ventura in Studio City.

How did you contribute to the film?

...I'm in the cast. I just said that.

Who are you in the cast then? Unnamed student in the hall? Student by lockers?

And what is this great line of Regina's that got cut?

He's been one of my favorite posters on this board for years--He offers a lot of cool insight that we wouldn't get otherwise having been part of the cast...

I'm not sure which Regina-line that he's referring to. It might be when Principal Duvall is going through the Burn Book with Regina...

Duvall: What's that say? Kaitlyn Caussin has WHAT???
Regina: Vadge odor!

reply

Oh so he actually was in the cast? My bad😳 haha
I thought he was one of those pretenders! But it's nice to have someone like that on the boards. Very cool😊
