Yes, they were superficial and catty, but mean? Not really. When I went to school, I had a weight problem and most girls left me alone, but the girls who did pick on me were what I would call mean. They would tell their boyfriends to make fun of me and would nastily ask me what I was looking at if I happened to accidentally glance their way. One would call me and my friend fat, and would hate to even have to sit by us, because she said it was the fat people's corner. Now, that is cruel. The girls in this movie did not seem to go in that direction, which is good.

The only mean person was Regina really.

Gretchen was only slightly mean in Regina's presence!
When she was gone, Gretchen was actually nice! Same with Karen.

Yes, but, still, they did it in a manner that did not seem to be as viscous or as nasty as a lot of girls I have run into. The girls in the movie seemed to be a little bit more lite hearted about it.

OP is weak. If you let anyone disrespect you without attacking back then you deserve the ridicule.

I do agree though, nobody in this movie was mean. But that's because it was aimed at sensitive (American) teens who (especially now) can't take any kind of conflict without folding up.

A bright light can hollow the deepest of nothingness.
