Why were the ladies so rude to her, and why did Janet burn her letter?

I think its because they were at the point where they wanted to keep Andrea for themselves - they didn't want anyone to take him away (of course, later on in the film their hold on him isn't as strong, they're able to accept that he will want to live his own life).

Yeah, I agree with hamben13. Deep inside they knew that would be a time Andre would have to go away and follow his own life, but they wanted to keep Andre to themselves and be as much as they could with him.
