Did anyone ever actually see them wear lavender?

Just wondering. :)

I didn't see them wear lavender but I think there was lavender in the bouquets that Andrea gave the sisters.

"I'll tell ya in a minute".

In lavender means out-of-fashion. I think that's what the title means.

As the saying goes... the time to make up your mind about people is never

Yes, I agree with you. A bit like "mothballs" (less poetic !).
The two sisters lived a semi-retired life on their own, they aged before knowing love...

Actually, I think it has a different meaning. I would say that it's all about the colour lavender - often worn by older ladies and a favourite flower of women (especially older women). For me, 'ladies in lavender' connotes feminity and elegance. Although they don't actually dress in the colour, the title brings to mind older women - the title tells us that the film is going to feature ladies of a certain age, who perhaps have an old-fashioned elegance about them. Only my opinion, of course - I think things often have many meanings.

Just fyi, from Wikipedia:

"The title is a play on words of the phrase 'Lace in Lavender' and refers to the custom of sprinkling dried lavender among clothing packed in storage to keep it smelling fresh and keeping moths away."

I actually thought it was some kind of reference to the phrase "laid out in lavender," aka laid out for burial.

Either way it seems pretty apropos for the theme of the film.

The dressing gowns they were wearing when they discovered Andrea. One was lavender, the other was nearer mauve.

Here is my interpretation of the title: There used to be a time that when items (such as clothing, sheets, and blankets) were store away in drawers and trunks, a few sprigs of lavender would be added to keep them smelling fresh and to keep moths away. The title refers to how the two sisters have more or less stored away their lives and emotions. They were "ladies in lavender." When they find Andrea and bring him home to care for him, their opened themselves to him. For awhile, he brought joy into their lives. But when he left, they put those emotions away, and returned to their ordinary lives again.
