BORING

Boring, boring and, oh, it's really boring. No plot, just an old woman looking forlorn about 40 fifty times. Boring.

reply

YOU are boring!!! This is true quality acting!!! Judi Dench is fantastic!!! She knows how to ACT just like her director Charles Dance!!! I would pick Ladies In Lavender over just about any movie made since the 70's!!! A movie with real ACTING!!!!

reply

agreed, princessmagical.

the acting rocked.

and if you if didn't care for the acting, the music was a m a z i n g.

Brühl is irritating. He plays not well, he is supposed to be Pole but can´t speak polish one word, his polish accent is awful (but his german is perfect;-).
Maggie and Judy are brilliant as usual.

reply

I thought Daniel Brühl was, like the 2 principal ladies, perfect. His acting was excellent, he looked the part and was, to my mind, absolutely ideal.

reply

You must be 12 years old. Only someone with the chronological (or mental age) under 12 would not appreciate the beauty of this movie. Cinematographically it is one of the best movies I have ever seen. And to say that Dame Judi is just an old woman looking forlorn about 40 times clearly shows a lack of appreciation of the art of acting. I hope that one day you are old enough to realise your error in calling this a boring movie (and I mean that in the nicest way.)
:)

reply

I think this movie was really boring too. The only redeeming factor beeing Judi Dench and her presence on the screen.

McElhone and Brühl (Olga and Andrea) seemed uninspired and tame. Then there was the sloppy editing, and the standard over the top silly musical score. It was bad, slick and sentimental.

I just didn't buy it at all, there was hardly any tension to speak of. This is no "The remains of the day". This is a waste of time. Actually, let me suggest another Judi Dench movie instead, "Mrs Brown" rocks. Well, that's just my opinion anyways..:)

reply

Anything but boring and yes I agree "Mrs Brown" was excellent! I adore Maggie Smith and Judi Dench! This movie was wonderful and oh how pleased I was upon finding it what with all the total trash out there today! These ladies know what acting is all about!

reply

Yes, I agree entirely with your comments about the film. It was nor boring! Another thing I liked about this movie was writer/director Charle's Dance's refusal to turn this film into the typical plot where the xenophobic villagers turned on the stranger in their midst. It was hinted at but Dance sucessfully avoided this more obvious conclusion. The acting was wonderful and Judi Dench was particularly heartbreaking!

reply

Well, some people ought to just stick to LOTR

reply

I have the very utmost regard for all three leads in this film. Judy Dench, Maggie Smith and Miriam Margoyles. However, I must agree with the previous correspondents. It did hold my attention but only just and the apparently acclaimed cinematography was, at times bordering on clumsy.
Please stick to acting Mr Dance. A very English film. With very English reticence. Some interpersonal dynamic would have helped and please, no more bloody cheery villagers!

reply

LOTR is stunning, but so is this film - the three leads i.e. Judi Dench, Maggie Smith and Daniel Brühl are all absolutely superb and neither is there a weak link anywhere else. The acting is brilliant throughout, the storyline is touching and the whole film has a fabulous feel-good factor that is all-too-lacking these days. By all means praise this film but do not cast doubts on how superb The Lord of the Rings is nor cast doubts about the taste of those who enjoy it. Not to enjoy anything can simply mean that one does not have the ability to find the enjoyment in it - not that there is a lack of enjoyment to be found. Certainly this is a subtle difference, but one that is far too easily forgotten.

reply

I thought it had a few powerful moments. Not a waste of time. But, yes, I caught myself looking at my watch.

reply

Ok, I'm 15 and I enjoyed the movie hugely. I'm from Mexico, and I want to resume all IMDB users' comments in this board in just two words:

GROW UP!

And I agree: you're boring!!!!!!!!

Highly recommendable.

jus watched the movie last nite, thought it was such a lovely, gentle film; was neva really impressed with Dame Judi Dentch until i saw her in tis ursula character. she was absolutely amazing. yes, the music was good too.

it wasnt really boring... its jus slow and gentle. mebbe those ppl who thought its boring, its bcoz they watched too mux of action and violence. hmmm..

reply

I didn't share your reaction to this very thought-provoking film that captures the wasteland of years spent by these sisters in prim isolation. The themes of lost and missed love are powerful and I surmise that in your youth, you've experienced little that opens your mind to see this metaphor. My suggestion would be to not look for a heroic mythic journey in every tale. Some of the most poignant and touching are the simple portrayals the desperate lives of lonely people who have to confront what they have missed and can never regain.

reply

Unbelievable, what no cars chases, drugs, sex, violence, intergaltic warfare. What did you want? It was not boring or even close. It was, infact, quite brilliant. Let me guess you are a teenager? Take it out again when you are older and wiser!

reply

i too, thought that this film was rather slow with it's plot ( was there a plot at all?). but cinematography-wise, it truely is a beautiful picture. and the actresses expressions were excellent. but the story lacked depth, or was it too deep?

reply

Of course it wasn't. It was a simple, modest, innocent and beautifil film. And actually, my friend, there was a plot, and you know what it was about. But, like I already said, it was simple. One of the good few feel-good foreign movies that came out in the 2004.

If you want the same thing with a more noticeable plot, see Vera Drake. If you want a similar simple film like this one was, see Dear Frankie (all of them from UK).

This is not a bad film, it is a terrible film. It is crippling boring, with a plot that could be covered in 5 minutes stretched out over 103 gut wrenching minutes.

The acting, so lauded in the comments above, is not much to speak of (then, with such dire source material, who can blame them). Judi Dench, one of our most overrated actresses, is utterly unconvincing and appears like a child, which can't have been the intention. Lovelorn teenager may have been intended, but it just doesn't work. Maggie Smith just plays the same sourpuss cow that she seems doomed to play until she dies.

I watched this on a plane (there was no other choice) and ended up treating it like self-flaggelation in the hope that this would do my karma good. It ended up providing me with a good benchmark for the most boring film ever.

I am 26, a film fanatic and in no way naive. I am just telling it how it is. Don't be blinded by the Dames and the lovee director; this film is simply bobbins.

reply

Look here johncloke, if someone is on an imdb message board they are most likely a 'film fanatic' as well. and just because you watch a lot of movies, doesn't mean you know the first thing about them! ANYONE who says that Dame Judi Dench is an overrated actress is clearly NAIVE.

Who, in your excellent opinion, is an UNDERRATED actress?! Jessica Simpson?!

Thank you so much for "telling us how it is" how could we possibly form opinions without experts like you?!

Regardless of the film or whether you liked it or not, it stars 3 of the most talented actresses in the world. Disagree? Take a look at their awards and accolades. Then maybe go back to 'film fanatic' school and get a bit of humility.

Bobbins yourself.

Ladies in Lavender is classic British acting at some of it's finest. It's not everyones' cup of tea, obviously. What's unfortunate is your condemnation of something you don't appreciate or, as evidenced by your commentary, even understand.

Might I add that it's impossible for either Judi Dench or Maggie Smith to be overrated, for their ability to play these characters so covincingly is beyond reproach. The bulk of this movie's acting is visual, particularly from Miriam Margoyles, often in the background.

I thoroughly enjoyed the subtle story and honest characters of this film. Ironically, I myself am a twenty six year old film enthusiast.

I suppose in all of your reading and education you have never come across the term 'childlike.' Her acting was the PERFECT rrepresenation of that term. Perhaps you should rent it again and watch it accordingly.

It was a wonderful film! You just didn't have the wherewithal to "get it" and this is beyond pathetic! You could be the "boring" one maybe?

reply

You seem to lack the depth to comprehend the magnitude of this film so why not go back to MTV or whatever it is you prefer and leave movies like this to those who have varied interests.
