How much violence?

So, I am really interested in seeing this film, but I am concerned about the amount of strong violence. I can take typical samurai violence ala Zatoichi or even Kill Bill, but since this is Miike you never know what to expect, like the crucifiction.

Is it bad?

oh yes, there is violence and much of blood and it's nowhere near samurai movies. anyway, you should definately watch it, it's bloody, but not in a sickening saw's way.

Okay, sounds fair enough. But does it exceed swordplay, like slow torture scenes or stuff like that? I know I sound like a wuss, but I really hate watching raw, sadistic violence, especially torture, face damage etc. A shame really, since it keeps me from seeing great flicks like Ichi the Killer...

well, you can always look away or just close your eyes, when you see it coming, can't you ? i don't remember ichi the killer as especially violent or with torture scene, and yet, i remember izo as bloodier. i suggest you should watch both movies, at least try. i skimmed izo now, if you can take with first scenes, you shouldn't find other ones more disturbing.

Thanks mate, I will give it a try then!

Finally watched it, and it wasn't really that violent. Sure, a lot of people get killed, but it's mostly not that graphic. I updated the Parents Guide for future reference.

Regarding the film, I loved it. Probably my favourite Miike-movie (though I've only seen about ten of them). The plot didn't seem that strange to me, you just need to follow the dialogue and keep and open mind. Can't understand why people would think it is boring.
