Synopsis from Chud.com. Could this be the greatest movie ever?

Here's a synopsis from Chud.com. Although their title is not an accurate translation (I believe it's something more like "crazy man of chaos or absurdity," Yes? Is it some kind of idiom?), that is one of the greatest titles of all time.

"Undeniably insane Japanese filmmaker Takashi Miike (Ichi the Killer, Audition) is apparently working on a movie titled Izo: The Crotch is an Incomprehensible Demon-Man. The synopsis:

We begin in 1865, when the Shogunate is on its last legs, but still capable of punishing its enemies. One is Izo (Kazuya Nakayama), an assassin in the service of Hanpeida (Ryosuke Miki), a Tosa lord and Imperial supporter. After killing dozens of the Shogun's men, Izo is captured and crucified.

Instead of being extinguished, his rage propels him through the space-time continum to present-day Tokyo, where his finds himself one with the city's homeless. Here Izo transforms himself into a new, improved killing machine, his entire soul still enraged by his treatment in his past life. His response to the powers-that-be, whose predecessors put him to death, is the sword.

His ability to leap through time, slashing as he goes, attracts the attention of the lords of the universe, who are like a pre-war House of Peers, in office for eternity. Izo, however, is not about to bow to anyone, even the lords of creation (he even rapes Mother Earth).

In the final conflict, the prime minister (Beat Takeshi), calls in allies from all eras, from samurai swordsmen to the yakuza. It should be the most bloody and violent sword fight sequence ever staged."

I was getting scared that, after One Missed Call and Zebraman, Miike was getting a touch too mainstream, but then something like this comes along and BLOWS ME THE F@#% AWAY!

reply

As I've said before, this synopsis sounds MUCH better than the bare-bones plot description we had going on here for a couple of months-- what a relief, since the false plot was really not that exciting. This sounds a hoozamajillion times better, and the website also has some really great "sneak peak" kind of deals going on.

Any idea when it's being released?

Resting his hand on a sandwich since 1984.

Can someone provide a link for this?

I can't find that anywhere.

is it just me...or does that story kinda remind ya of Spawn. still cant wait though.
be funny if the final scene had a little Dead or Alive thing going, but instead we see Kitano and Miike unloading bullets into each other. =P

Holy f uck. If this comes to America, I'm going to piss my pants. And I will parade through the streets screaming, "TAKASHI MIIKE IS YOUR NEW GOD." And I won't care that my pants are urine soaked. I WON'T CARE.

He is my favorite director still working. But don't expect most of his films to make it over here. Maybe Izo will, but most of them won't. We have some *beep* up standards here and most people wouldn't even get the finer points of his movies. they might get a kick out of some of the scenes he comes up with but I don't think present day america is ready for Takashi Miike.
Can you imagine Visitor Q being made with an american studio?
I hope Miike-san always remains with the independant spirit and stays away from hollywood.
although I doubt anything could corrupt him, he is genuinely odd.

as long as I can still find the dvds...I don't mind if he never catches on here. I don't think he cares either.

And many arthouse cinemas play his films on a somewhat frequent basis, totally unnoticed by the Spider-Man-watching public. I saw Happiness of the Katakuris, Audition, and Visitor Q at a theater down the street. But then again, that's Portland for you.

Yes! It's one of my favorite theaters. I have to go catch Battlefield Baseball before it leaves.

GOZU! I highly recommend that movie!

(saw it at FantAsia 2004 in Montréal)

Izo sounds like a cross betwwen Spawn, The Crow and Versus.

reply

Don't ever mention Versus in the same sentence as this masterpiece.

She's gone to warn the wizard! Come on, get my tin hat!

this film was brilliant!!
Bullshyt MR han-man!!

reply

Yeah. Versus has some cool camera angles and effects but its nowhere even as close to brilliant as Izo is. I saw this film for the first time last night and I HAVE to watch it again tonight, it was that cool. You have to be able to not mind the gore though because it constantly flows.

David Lynch is the man! Oh yeah and watch Twin Peaks TV series!

Just to add more respect to Izo. Repeat viewings really improve this film.

Quoted for the truth, i can't say i'm a fan of the film, but i respect Miike a lot for daring to make something like this. For most directors, and especially directors working in a "big studio" system, a movie like this will be a career-killing decision.

"I believe the common character of the universe is not harmony, but hostility, chaos and murder."

reply

Izo is very underrated

reply

Damn, I rather wish I'd read that synopsis before seeing the movie. That's a good synopsis. The movie is rather incomprehensible, I think, but if you knew this synopsis, you could just relax and let the madness wash over you, maybe even pick up on some of the finer points of the plot (though half the film is really just ridiculous action/killing sequences anyways).
