Its a baseball cliche - to say "its the bottom of the 9th," means: something is near its end - i.e. its 'crunch time' (there are only 9 innings in baseball). Saying that it was the 'bottom of the 8th,' signified that the guy really didn't know anything about sports - making him even more of a 'loser' in the other character's eyes.

i dont know much about sports, but i do know that bottom of the eight is from baseball. i can sort of imagine an announcer adding on and on about how its the last inning and the game is almost over. perhaps the team is down by a million(exxageration of course) and all hope is lost. i dont know what the usual solution is becasue i dont watch sports. either you give it all you got anyway or you just give up. i dont know. but the only thing i got from it was that the chess club guy said it first and being a chess freak he doesnt know one sport from another. the whole point of the fat guy(his lazy companion)was that he wanted to catch a football game(not a baseball game). he sort of attempted to continue to make fun of him for not knowing that bottom of the 8th wasnt even football, but he dropepd it and thus their friendship somewhat started. so to show it throughout the movie that they had indeed formed a friendship they kept repeating the saying. sort of like an inside joke shared only between the 2 of them i guess. does that make a little more sense. sorry its all i can input. i just watched the movie myself. maybe if i watch it a little more i can understand it and input again if that helps
