Ribisi's voice

At what point in the production do you think they settled on the way he spoke? I can't imagine in auditions they put out a call for "a peculiar non descript accent with lots of semi whispering combined with a nasally whine".

Was this Ribisi's call on the first day of shooting? "Hey guys, I have an idea on how I'm going to play this, you're gonna love it!"
