What in the heck DIFFERENCE does it make...

...whether Elliot built toy planes or planes for people to fly in?

He was the only one out there who knew how to put a plane together...PERIOD. That should have been good enough.

It's amazing how worked up they got over the fact the he didn't build "real planes" for a living. Just like people would have done in real life, like something stupid.

It makes a huge difference, come on now would you trust a guy who makes model planes for a living with your life ?

reply

Well its like he says in the film, the dynamics of how something flies are all identical and proportional to scale

reply

So he says, im more then sure theres a hell of a lot more to it then that, but any way it was a decent film imo

reply

If you were going to die anyways, it would seem worth the risk to me.

You're in the real world now and the lunatics have taken over the asylum.

reply

exactly, the two choices were sit there and die, or take a chance in the plane.

reply

For reals. He should have just said, fine stay here, gives the rest of us a better chance.

reply

For me it's simple:
Elliot just kick's ass and is the only normal person. Everyone else is pretty retarded... seriously !

I feel sorry for him

It matters because they just waged their lives on building that plane. He pretended to have built real planes for real people, but he hadn't. They had a choice to either wait or build it, and had they known everything, they might have made a different choice.

The movie explores group dynamics, and their response was entirely predictable. Elliot remade the group around his expertise, and when they found it his projected image of that expertise wasn't accurate, the group revolted against the way the group was built.

However, Elliot made the right decision. He knew for a fact he could get the plane built before the water ran out, and he knew for a fact that he had the necessary knowledge. However - more importantly - Elliot also believed that they would not accept his idea if they knew the truth.

And can I just say - WOW - Giovanni Ribisi's acting was the greatest I've seen in a long time. I really don't like him, I think he gets typecasted as somewhat of a tit, but this role and him just matched.

Shadows fell on their futile ways, and then there was nothing more...

reply

he was a weirdo. he did a good acting job and making his own character. he was nonetheless a tit anyway. i like 1965 alot better. 2004 seemed like a run and shoot and get this movie out the door so we can make a buck type of film.

reply

should have pulled the trigger.

reply

In both films I too didnt get why they were so prejudiced against the guy, a model plane has to fly too, and noone else had a plan to get them home. Also Elliot was constantly right, and constantly ignored. It made me cross!

reply

In the original film, the plane designer was a German (played by Hardy Kruger). This gave for some post-war tension between the designer and the rest of the crew. This was lost in this version. Perhaps Elliot should have been an Iranian to provide addiitonal tension between the characters?

reply

He builds MODEL PLANES, not TOYS!

;)

reply

Yes it is a silly plot line. As principles of aerodynamics are the same just on larger scale. He also states that he doesn't make gliders but actual engine powered planes,

It is fun and games until someone gets caught. Then it's rape.

reply

I would have been pissed to have been lied to but I get why he did it. I get their point too though, it's not the same thing. It's like if someone told you they were a surgeon before they did surgery on you then told you they were a vet once they got started. You wouldn't just be like "oh it's the same thing".

Yeah but if you were stranded in a desert and needed some type of immediate surgery and the only one who had any surgical expertise was a veterinarian, I'm sure you'd take your chances with the vet doing surgery on you then either dying or letting someone else try.

Completely agree. Thought the same thing since it came out.
