Why Does the Audience Believe the Mother is "Innocent?"

I'm not suggesting she's a wicked woman who wants her sons dragged to some remote Transsiberian island and killed. I'm just amazed at the amount of viewers who don't see her as complicit in what happen to her boys, possibly for the most benign of reasons.

I'm not 100% on the details, but I recall the mother expecting the children back after 2 or 3 days. The children themselves decided to stay on with the father for the rest of the week, saying something along the lines of "It'll be ok. She'll know we're with father."

Wow, I've seen the film tons of times--even started learning Russian because of it--and I missed this line. Will have to re-watch again this week (always a pleasure for me).

Depends what you mean by complicit. Some people have seen this film about being about Russia in general. Yes and no... but it can also be about the past not being what we remember.
