Great movie, but...

I really enjoyed this movie and all the mystery that is going around about father and the chest he dug up. But the end left me somewhat, blank.
Why? Because, all the way I was thinking what was the father's story, but as movie went forward I understood that the movie is actually about the "father - son" relationship, so father's history fell in a second plane ie. not is what the film's about. So, when father actually sank and movie ended up with boys crying, shouting and just going, I just felt that there was a climax coming, but missed... Maybe it's just me, but the ending was just unfulfilling.
But, on the other hand, that's actually the feeling one has when father is absent.

A sense of something unfulfilled is (in my opinon) at the centre of this film. We are left with the same perspective as the two brothers. A father, barely known, dying with his secrets. That's the emptiness that allows us to empathise with them.

Ivan's acceptance of his father...to late...chasing him into the waves was incredible cinema.

The ending was a beautiful tragedy.

I hadn't thought of it like that, but that's a pretty interesting way of explaining it :)

Really surprised this movie didn't win more awards.... the acting was wonderful, the directing was superb, the plot line was original. I remember one of the reviews at the beginning said something like, "Hollywood could never think up a movie like this", which is totally true. Hollywood hasn't had an original idea in years, and it's all superficial garbage.

This movie is Never about " where the father was " .... it's about the tragic and psychological effects of his absence ...

those kids are desperate to have a real father , you can touch all that deep desperation in the scene of drowning ... when they both are shouting at the sinking body : Father .. father ... papa ...papa ....

The climax was there, you just missed it. Ivan started yelling - "Daddy, daddy", something his father was trying to force him to do. In order for his sons to love him, the father had to die.

Great responses here. I felt the same way first but got it in the end. Beautiful film. Im glad they did it this way and not as the original script with two older guys or one of the kids dying, its stronger this way i think.

The director was going to use older boys? If there's a site where this production is discussed in its pre-production stage, I would really appreciate hearing where I could read about it.
