The dance club scene (spoilers possible)

potential spoilers

so i was a little high and drinking while i watched this (because i assumed it was going to be that kind of movie). Also reserve your attacks on me until the question is at least answered by yes or no lol.

I remember the club scene very well. However, it was never revealed if the girl cheated on him or was raped in the club. At least i didn't catch that part if it did. So could anyone fill me in. Was she raped, molested, just being extremely flirty or what? What the heck happened. Is it implyed somewhere?

You guys didn't get that from the movie?

A lone blonde dancing amongst a sea of black man in a dodgy shack, her friends being refused re-entry and clothes being taken off?

I first read the book about 8 or 9 years ago, and for some reason I specifically remembered this scene quite well after the first read. Seeing it again last night while watching the movie gave me that exact creepy feeling in my stomach. It may be that I think that entire scenario is probably a boyfriend's/husband's WORSE nightmare. Could you imagine that happening to your girl, getting gang-raped in a run down, sleezeball bar, and you can do nothing about it? Damn..

her being in that club was equivalent to a white woman walking around the projects wearing an "i hate n-words" shirt. it was already stated that the locals didn't like his character let alone his wife to be. she was drunk went to a dive club and was dancing with strange men all night. If my wife had even attempted that *beep* i would have pulled her away forcefully, also my wife has more common sense than that. ( i realize some will look at forcefully as a word meaning i'm going to do harm, but in all honesty if you are around someone so drunk they cannot reason you have to pull them or pick them up sometimes to get them out of a situation).

again i feel like she brought all that *beep* on herself and her stupid boyfriend was a coward for not dancing with her the whole time and/or just making her leave. Nobody deserves to get raped but she pretty much got naked opened her legs and said have at it.

I saw the movie and I was a bit offended because they made it look like she was raped. After hearing about the book I see that she was actually raped. Now what I am trying to figure out is if "rape" means she was just gang-banged...or if they mean that she was held down and and physically forced.

Because from the scene she seemed to be enjoying the entire situation she put herself in. Not only that, but the large dark colored man unzips her dress and she never even noticed...in fact, the only time she even stopped dancing was when she saw her fiance' getting kicked out. Now I personally never seen a woman soo drunk that she didn't notice her clothes being taken off yet still retain the balance and functional ability to dance and smile and laugh. If she were that drunk then she would have been falling and stumbling and slurring all over the place.

And don't get me wrong, no means no. I don't care if she took all her clothes off and spread eagle, that does not give a man the right to force her into anything she doesn't want to do. But I think her intentions were to seduce or entice Kemp while getting a rise out of her fiance. On top of that she probably wanted to make a scene there since she stood out in the crowd. But why she turned her attention to the local is beyond me.

Now to make another point, I think the scene was trashy, distasteful, disrespectful, and purposely manipulated to evoke a gut wrenching feeling. I think they intentionally preyed upon the taboos and stereotypes prevalent in American culture. It played out in an illogical fashion and seemed to be merely to provoke or to get a bit of nervous excitement out of the viewer. All the subliminal messages throughout the film made the scene predictable...I knew it was gonna happen when she first mentioned the Carnival.

you know this was in the book right? you saying Hunter S Thompson preyed upon these taboos?

whether she consented or not was very much not clear at all

Agree with other posters. In the film I assumed she was either going to be raped or have a great time with the guy she was dancing with who was undressing her on the dance floor, but mostly I got the impression it would be rape.

But then she turned up at this place a day or so later like nothing had happened which seemed odd and made me re-evaluate how I interpreted what I'd seen.

There was that incredible look between the two of them at the door which could be interpreted either as silently telling him the horror of what had just happened to her, or just pleading for him not to hold those events against her.

Not sure if that comes down to bad film making or if they just chose to keep it more ambiguous in the film.

Exactly. It just wasn't clear on what happened. Especially since not only did she show up, she was about to have sex with him as well. I imagine the emotional side effects of rape would run pretty deep, especially if it was something crazy like a public gang rape. At least deep enough to not want to have sex for a while.

except if she was a slut...which was hinted on quite often

I also didn't get why they had not called the police or something... although, when you think about it, she probably deserved what she got

reply

I'm with you. She deserved what she got. She had a good life and threw it away. It started with her hand on Kemp's leg in the Corvette. She was basically cheating on her rich fiancé right there.

yeah pretty clear. people here assume they need to see the rape scene for it to have an validity. pretty clearly she was gangbanged. whether the sex was rape or not is however is questionable. sex is rape when it's not consensual. she was pretty damn skanky.
