Too many people refuse to view entertainment in general that doesn't sock them between the eyes with vulgarity or even the slightest bit of subtlety.
You hand, Jack Skellington is a perfect examle. "The Nightmare Before Christmas" as just chock full of interesting comments about the human condition, not to mention lots of sly comedy, but relatively speaking did not reach a large audience because they were required to think.
I don't want to come across as too high-minded here, because there is some pretty funny silly stuff out there, but it doesn't resort to the most base of human emotions in order to get a laugh.
If a few more people would see films like "The Rum Diary" and chose to turn their intellect lever in the "on" setting, I believe they would appreciate shows such as these much more. It always amazes me how true stories, or in this case, films bases on true stories, are often the most entertaining. Few writers can dream up the sort of stories, including comedies, that nature provides to us each and every day.
Hats of to the Rum Diary.
