It isnt so much going to hurt these people as much as it exploits their native land and makes them second to consumerism leaving them continue to be neglected. The movie takes place during the westernization of the island and the people were fed up with any attention being given to the island not to build better homes or schoola but casinos, resorts and banks all while their language is replaced by English. This is why they protest the English newspaper and Paul wants to do something positive with it to win them over.
