Boring and silly

Boring, silly, and mostly not funny. Has anything film script taken from Hunter S. Thompson been successful?

Not sure the point of this movie. Clearly, the point wasn’t to entertain, as this is slow and boring, and nothing gets accomplished. It takes place in the 1960s Puerto Rico with a typical Hollywood liberal anti-business plot. Intended to keep up the indoctrination of kids out of college who may not have been fully indoctrinated in college. Evil, mostly-White businessmen want to colonize an unnamed island that is just off the coast of Puerto Rico and part of the territory. Depp comes to a dying newspaper, he meets a publicist looking for a writer to pimp his hotel idea. Depp falls in love with his fiancee. And nothing much happens. And the movie ends.

Congrats, you just wasted ten bucks and two hours.

WTF are you talking about? You sound like a conspiracy theorist rambling on a street corner. All you need is an upside trash can to drum on and 6 jackets even though it's warm out. If you have something personal to say to the OP then message him, otherwise we end up with a bunch of incoherent posts.

Back on topic, I agree with the OP. This movie was a bunch of nothing for 2 hours. Terrible cinematography, phoned in acting all around, amateur script, poor editing, unfunny jokes and non-convincing drama, etc.

Looking back on it, I really can't find a single reason to watch it...

Spot-on review. It was hilarious when they started complaining about how all the locals were being laid off, and then later on *also* complained that the new hotels would create 5,000 jobs.

reply

I agree...just watched it last night and I found myself looking at the clock every once in a while.

The only thing that kept me interested is that Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands are my favorite places in the world. For me, it was fun to see them drive around Old San Juan and I could point out places.

Anyway, I've never been a fan of Hunter S. Thompson. Maybe I'm just not "cool enough" to get his stuff...maybe I need to do a lot of drugs or something...I don't know. But his stories are just rambling tales of drugged out/drunk drifters who have no purpose in life and nothing much gets done.

reply

That's the point. Hunter was constantly writing about the "American Dream" and how the elusive search is a universal occurrence. Everyone is just feeling their way through life, and some people get caught up in their own *beep* for too long to realize how far they've fallen.

Well that's fine if that was his view, but how many different ways can you tell the same story?

If we want reality, we can turn on the news or go to a coffee shop and listen to people's conversations.

The poster is right on - this is the most boring, stupid movie I've seen in awhile. SLow, no point to it - just AWFUL!!

And that stupid expression on Johnny Depp - like he's on drugs.

reply

Thought it was awful, the performances looked dialled in, the script had more holes than the scotland football teams defence and the pacing will put you in a coma. What has happened to johnny depp ??

Avoid.

Agree with the OP. Nothing much happens in this movie. And Depp's character shows little capacity to get anything big accomplished, yet after treading through two hours of lows and disappointments with his character, they literally write in a syrupy, sunshine-and-lollipops ending, saying he got married to his elusive love interest and became one of the most revered writers in the country. Yeah right.
