The boy wins because he gives the wife a safe rebellious option. Everytime we see her she behaves like a child. she rubs herself on the cold taps in the icecream palour, when we first meet her on the telephone she is dressed in her undies and a T shirt like a teenage girl, not a wife running a business.
the husband cuts her off when she is talking and turns the conversation to himself. at the dinner party, the wife makes all the effort to talk and entertain the guest while the husband has the "father role" of smiling indulgently at the little woman.
the boy wins becuase he allows the wife to be childlike and be a girl with little responsibility and that is the exact opposite of the serious husband who has a "father role" at work as well as a teacher.

I agree! She didn't want to grow up---he made reference to having a baby, she wasn't ready. The boy wouldn't have pressured her to be responsible. He just wanted fun. I think that is why she was mad at him later because he told her he loved her and she wasn't looking for love, just fun.

In any case...no one really "won". It's a tragic story. Elaine looks happy, but she lost a man who would have loved her forever even though she wasn't really a "grown up".
Chet is in Cambodia and who knows what will happen there? And considering he was only 15, maybe 16 at that time, what did he do? Quit high school? Unless we are moving many years forward for the last scenes.
No one wins in this movie. It's a complete screw job for them all in the end.
It is obviously in the FUTURE when Chet and Heather are in
Cambodia. He is 20 years old. It said so in the film. He has
longer hair, and he has a little growth on his face too.

I don't understand, how does the boy "win"? The marriage is broken up, all three have gone their seperate ways. The boy ends up maybe establishing a relationship with the girl who had a crush on her teacher. I'm not sure what you mean by the boy won. Other than maybe he ended up with the school girl who had a crush on David.
