Fight scene between the two guys...

At the end of the fight, when Frances' character walks in on them fighting in Disneyworld, Chet's character has an erection and quickly hides it. What's the reason behind this????

To me, it could go either way. Either he really is physically attracted to Dave, and this proves it, or he is just emotionally attracted to him, and this just happened. I personally think it was just because of the anger, the love, everything combined.. guys get boners for odd reasons sometimes?!

reply

That was my guess too. He was emotionally attracted to the both of them. But as a young person, he might translate that into physical as well.

I liked the messiness of the fight too and I was happy it wasn't a fatal stabbing, just a stupid one. Although I can't entirely blame Chet, given how much smaller he was.

He got an erection because he was 15, and thats what happens at that age, when your hormones are raging, and especially under such an emotionally confusing time as this was; his emotions were on the edge, and he'd just been in very close physical contact with another human being. Erections aren't always the byproduct of sexual attraction; like the above poster so eloquently stated "guys get boners for odd reasons sometimes".

Yes, in real life boners just sometimes happen. In film, however, getting an erection means something. The same way, his masturbation in the shower after spending the evening with the couple implies that he was turned on by one of them.
Sure, in real life, he might have been thinking about something that he saw in school that day, but the film-maker juxtaposed the two scenes to tell us something so we can assume the masturbation was related to the evening spent with the couple the same as we can assume the erection was related to what had just happened with the wrestling (and the Greg rubbing lotion on his ears.)

You could very well be right. But I made this post nearly 8 years ago, and I don't even recall seeing this film anymore. It's currently available on Netflix instant stream so I'll check it out and see if my perspective, which I don't even recall, has changed after all these years.

David was being sexually aggressive & probably groping him. Chet didn't want it and was scared (obviously) but his body responded which happens. That physical response can be a painfully confusing thing in sexually abusive circumstances such as this one. There is no way in the world that that scene was a depiction of alpha male wrestling. It's disturbing that people don't see how creepy this is. There'd be no confusion at all about the predatory nature of this couple's behavior if the kid were a 15yo girl, even one as precocious as Chet. They were up to know good from the get-go. We only bought into the illusion they presented of empathic yuppies which is the kid's perspective. Obviously, there's a lot of secrets beneath the surface. The pills are one of the clues that everything is not so healthy as it seems.
