Johnny Cash

I still say Johnny Cash should have won one of the major awards he was up for...exspecially video of the year. Everytime I watch Hurt I cry, Johnny Cash does an amazing job remaking the song (and Trent is an awesome writer too). I understand that this is MTV and it isn't cool to "honor" artists that aren't hip-and-now (I'm 16 and I find Johnny Cash amazing...and I'm not into country at all) but they made a huge mistake not giving Johnny Cash more than 1 award. He is one of the few artists remaining that still pour their hearts and souls into their songs...unlike some of these other MTV favorites who sing about sex and pimping.

Thank god people agree with me! Johnny Cash did an outstanding job only to be shotdown by some pop star who wants to be black and a song about being a "working girl."

Johnny Cash's video is great, artsy, and everything, but please don't forget that the Missy video is awesome. It's very clever and she always does unique fun videos. It's great to see that, when most of the other rap/r&b video seem to have the same club theme going on. Missy's videos are totally original. Johnny Cash should have got at least one award, possibly even the "best video" award, but you can't hate on Missy's "work it" video. It is MTV's award show, so you can't really expect Johnny Cash to win. I bet a lot of people haven't even seen that video.

I'm not hating on Missy Elliot I have respect that she's made it in the entertainment world and not being a size 2...but I don't like the song and even if it is a creative video it doesn't make you think about it afterwords.

I to would have liked to see Johnny Cash get the award for best video.

I am 20 years old, and I realized that "Hurt" was much better than "Work It". I don't even think MTV knows good music, even if it came up and bit them in the @$$. I am not a country fan at all, but even I understand that Johnny Cash, with the song-writing genius Trent Reznor, should have won that award.

it won best cinematography in a video though, it would've been a total shame if it didn't win anything.
I just got a say this though, I love Missy Elliot and i have mad respect for her, although my choice for best video wasn't her's it was Johnny Cash as well, and really u could sense that everybody thought that, even Snoop Dogg when he gave out the award. He said, "I have lots of love for Johnny Cash..." or something like that before he annouced the winner. Missy Elliot respects Cash, and so does Justin Timberlake, he thought that he didn't deserve the award and he paid respect to Cash...so u can't really hate them or disrespect them for winning over Cash. It's not like they had a say in it.
And u have to look at it like this: MTV has rarely played it on the air, i don't think it's ever been seen on MTV. So if u think about it, they could've totally ignored the video. But they obviously noticed it, it's a strong and emotional video, thus the video ended up getting nominated. If you watched the VMA Pre-Show they did a nice news piece on the video and Johnny Cash.
Even though it didn't win the big one, atleast it won something, and it's an important one: best cinematography. I'm happy that the video was recognized, instead of just being completely ignored and overlooked.

Agreed there!

I love Johnny Cash. I mean, I'm not into country, but his songs are so comforting and his voice is so emotionally charged. I saw his video on VH1 with my older brother and my mother. At the end, I was almost in tears and my mom and bro were just like "Wow".

I don't really hate Missy Elliot, because when I first saw her, I thought she was the coolest (respect to female rappers!).

And I'm happy Johnny Cash won at least 1 award and Missy and Justin paid respects to him.

She paid respects? What did she say? I must have missed that part or something.

reply

i don't think Missy didn't really pay respects to Cash during her speech, she basically paid respects to Aaliyah (RIP) from what i remember. I think she did acknowledge him on either on the VMA's Diary special or during the pre-show piece on Cash...either it was her or I'm getting her mixed up w/ someone else for some reason.
But I remember catching the credits at the end and they had the video montage of the night going on and there were just so many people acknowleging Cash. I thought it was cool

reply

I really didn't think she paid respects...not to be rude I just think she didn't.
