movie

do you think that someday this would be turned into a movie, starting with the 1st game? with real people not CG. a trilogy kinda like LOTR, or maybe even longer. who would be a good director and april ryan?

reply

I don't know if I'd want to see The Longest Journey/Dreamfall with real people. First of all, they'll never find actors who look like the characters, with an adaptation from a book they can use a lot of creative license if they want but it's a lot harder with a game. We know what April looks like and sounds like, it would be hard for any player to get into the movie or suspend disbelief when the protagonist is so starkly different from the original platform.

Finding an actor/actress who can be made to look like the characters in the game is not too much of a problem.

See this picture:

(She's Katja Koopmann, a Germand model who was hired for TLJ promotional events in Germany in 2000.)

I think the bigger problem would actually be acting, i.e. recreating April Ryan in case of a TLJ movie as we know her from the game. In the English version of TLJ, Sarah Hamilton has made such a strong impression on me that I can hardly imagine if any other actress could make me believe she's the same April.

Moreover, TLJ's long and elaborate story should be simplified and shortened for a feature-length film. And there's no chance distributors will invest in another LOTR-sized trilogy movie every now and then. (SW and LOTR are huge exceptions even for the largest studios.)

P.S. I've yet to receive Dreamfall so I can't reflect on that.

Hey, that's a nice photo. I kinda agree though, i think it might be hard to find an actress who can do the voice of April and still look something like her. I wonder what Sarah Hamilton herself looks like?

reply

I wouldn't be surprised if someone tried to adapt it to screen sometime, and it could be an interesting project. Personally, I hope it doesn't happen, as TLJ is somewhat "sacret" to me, and I love it just the way it is. ^^

reply

I would love it as a movie, if they could find a director who would do it justice. I wouldn't mind an actress who doesn't look exactly like April, as long as she can express the same personality. I hesitate to say this, but the only only name that pops out at me is Lacey Chabert, I don't know why. If Sandra Bullock were many years younger, she would have been good.

Edited: to add this link to a pic of Lacey. This must be why I was picturing her. . .

They have doctors for this sort of thing!

Seeing that photo, I can agree with you, though I reckon she's a bit too... I don't kow, girlie (though not in the photo). Anyway, I'd be just as worried about the cast of Cortez as April, and not to mention - for personal, hang-up reasons - Charlie ^^ I wouldn't want them to ruin Charlie.

It would be great seeing it as a movie if they, as you say, would do it justice, but unfortunately, I can't see that happen. I guess my cynical mind has been disappointed one time too many by adapted screenplays. Especially having sci-fi _and_ fantasy aspects, I reckon it would be too difficult, as they're the two genres that tend to fail the most on screen.

The only hope I see for this project, would be making it outside of Hollywood (at least manuscript-wise), but then it would probably not survive, as it would need the best digital artists and Hollywood recognition to make it.

Rumor has it that Tamela D'Amico did the poser work for Zoe, so she was based on a real person.

I'm late for the party but I must say, after seeing Shameless, I can imagine Emmy Rossum (Fiona in the show) plying April. I think she looks a bit like her, they can cut off her hair and put some blue contact lenses. She is slim, young looking and has a voice similar to April.

and listen to her during this interview; i actually find her voice very close to april's

Natalie Portman just kinda popped into my head for Zoe. And I'm not at all a Star Wars geek (haven't even seen the ones she's in).

I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as the fly by.

Oh *beep* you already. She doesn't look anything right.

Edit: Whoops, sorry, i wasn't reading well, i thought you were talking about April Ryan. Still, i think Natalie might not be right. I'd probably like to see some less known actress as April or Zoƫ.

reply

I don't think I'd like to see a TLJ movie with real actors (the looks/ the voices!, all will be different). Maybe CGI movies will do but... that will be like playing the game so... nevermind.

reply

Agreed.

I don't see it working.... the whole science world vs magick world thing would be mega cheesy on a big screen.... no offense or anything.... I loved the game- it made me cry!
