Rosamund Pike...

Is it just me, or was Rosamund Pike absolutely phenomenal in this movie?!? I haven't seen her in too many things, but this definitely made me take notice. Not only is she strikingly beautiful, but she has such a talent for portraying her emotions through just a look.

That "chair scene" was...WOW. Powerful stuff.

I couldn't help but feel sorry for her character throughout the entire movie. The other Lizzie just annoyed the heck out of me.

I agree I've always thought that Rosamund Pike played th every tricky role of wife, but not doormat but the figure who still loves and ultimately stands by him. This role was an acting minefeild ,with huge potential to get it wrong, we saw her pain and hurt, but she was not a stereotype downtrodden wife, there was ever a strength to her, you could tell this was a couple who was ideally suited, but apart through circumstances
Like you I found Mrs Barry hugely irritating, even takinginto account the character of Barr was a cold fidh who apeared touse men cynically. She was obviously ambitious and you should feel this was a woman who was driven and doing things on her own ters but she sees to appear a total blank, Inever felt she felt anything.. in fact it was only when listening to the directors commentary that I learned that Barry feels anything, like love and regret when leaving rochesrer in the thearet 'life is not an urgent succession of now's ' scene.. but I never had to be told or miss completely what rochesters wife feels,
I nevr get why Morton is assumed to be a great actress, Ive always heard she was really something so Ive watched a good few films of hers, and she never seems to convey any emotion she seems to just be there, and there is no feeling at all no layers and depth to heracting, so when the far more difficult role, to do, the tightrope of the wifes role, is done so fantastically, and of course the acting genius Depp reaches as the tortured Hedonist the godhaunted athetist, contradiction of Rochester there were two actors reaching fantastic levels its a shame so large a role of the Mistress fell so flat and empty, so much soyou neve knew why he felt anything for her, which was a slightly undermining case of affairs for the film.

I agree. From the first time I saw the film, I felt we saw far too little of Rosamund Pike's brilliant performance. She and Johnny were incredible in that "chair scene". I also think the chemistry was better between Depp and Pike as compared to Depp and Morton. There was a more natural feeling in their scenes.

I am just so disappointed that there was not more of the deleted footage included on the Dvd. What I wouldn't give to see all those deleted scenes.

Id loved the film to be about his whole life, not just his decine, there would be a lot more of Rosamund Pike in that, cos that was the relationship that worked best, and Id have loved to see more of him and his mother, for the contempt and battle of wills those two had, endlessly

I agree that Rosamund Pike's performance is the female role that stood out for me as well, and I'm replying to ElyseN's post because I also agree that she and Depp had better chemistry.

However, I thought Samantha Morton was great too. It actually fits in my mind that Rochester and Barry shouldn't seem romantically right together, because I don't feel that they were. I think that they certainly shared certain characteristics and Barry certainly fitted into the category of the strong woman Rochester was drawn to... but even if passionate at first, it certainly wasn't deep, true love from what I can see. And going further, from what I've read of her, Barry seems to have been an even less sympathetic character in real life than she is in the film, so again, I think Morton's performance gets her rather well.

I wish there was more of Rosamund in the film, but indeed there would have been had it included Rochester's earlier life, and though she doesn't get a huge number of scenes, the ones she does get are often very emotional, so they make up in content what they lack in number.

But yes, Rosamund gave a brilliant performance here and she is the one who is less often mentioned which really shouldn't be so! And acting-wise, I think the chair scene is probably the epitome of the film and is acted thus from both Rosamund and Johnny.

I agree with you spiral static, I hadnt quite thought of it that way, but the fact Rochester and Barry dont seem romantically right for each other, fits totally with how they come over on screen. Jane seems right when she says that its the theatre that has drawn Rochester to a 'plain woman'.
In life and in the film, it is his wife he has the true chemistry with, and the only true lasting bond

I wanted to see this movie because of her actually.
I was curious how much she was in it, but if it's a good performance, I suppose it's worth watching either way.

Watched it.
I agree with you guys after having seen it.
The scene in which she drank from the last bottle of wine to make her point...it was really powerful to me.

I felt sorry for her character.
It was a wonderful performance.

Love Rosamund Pike in this film. She had great chemistry with Depp. Two great performances.

That was the reason why I rented the DVD too. I am a huge Rosamund fan. This performance was briliant. I was really impressed by her scene when Johnny returns in such a sickly state, and she has the arguement about the wine. And, the final scene when she is laying on the bed when he dies. She was amazing.

she was tremendous in this, Id not seen any of her other films at all before seeing her in this, but Id certainly be interested in hearing about what roles she has that equal this

A very powerful scene between Johnny and Rosamund !

The chair scene is ....

Probably one of the best scenes in cinema I've seen in recent years.

Why can't Johnny tap into this more and stop taking silly Burton roles

It proves what a talent he can be if he wanted and chose better roles

but then again he doesn't have to but he has plenty of time !

Rosamund was incredible as well though.

The right chemistry is essential !

I agree. She is fantastic in this with Johnny Depp. She's very beautiful and a great actress

She was the only good thing in this wretched abomination.

I totally agree with you arete_1. Johnny Depp was fine too but the film as a whole was meh.

Break the rules and in a couple of years you will have a hell of a story to tell.

She was good but not really the only good thing in a movie where Johnny Depp gives a powerhouse performance.
