Do you think Johnny deserves an Oscar for this film?

Johnny gives one of his best performances in this film and I am sure many people feel it's about time he won an Oscar after being nominated 2 times so far.His performance is Oscar worthy but he might not get a nomiantion because this film probably didn't get seen by many people.

I think Johnny deserves an Oscar for his peformance. What do you think?

Most of the people who get Oscars are the ones who conform to what Hollywood believes they should be, Johnny's not like that, although I do agree Johnny should get one, he's overdue. He has so many good movies, but if you ask me the award shows are just a popularity contest.

I think he shouldnt be over looked for this movie

Oscars are all political any way....he has a better chance getting an oscar for Pirates of the Caribbean 2 or 3 at this point all due to hype and popularity. But personally, that shouldnt be the role he attains his oscar for in my opinion. Even though I absolutely adore him as captain jack, I thought he did a better job in the first movie than in the second as the swashbuckling rogue. But I think he should have gotten something for this movie and many others in the past.

Like I said..its all political...in the end, everyone knows how great and diverse of an actor he is, even without the award.

reply

I agree with everyone on here who's said that this is one of his best performances, if not the best. I think he should definitely win the Oscar for this one...even if no one else does.

It was a freakin pillar of fire!!

Deserves an Oscar?
That's a matter of opinion.

Earned an Oscar?
Well, that's a unanimous vote.

Absolutely deserves the Oscar!

reply

He absolutely deserves the Oscar for his performance, but unfortunately I don't think he will get at least a nomination.:( Anyway, we loved him as John Wilmot and that's the most important thing..

reply

Johnny Depp deserved the Academy Award for Best Actor, his performance in this film left all the other actor nominees of 2005 (2005 honours 2004 films) in the dust.

John Malkovich, Michael Nyman, Laurence Dunmore, and Stephen Jeffreys also deserved Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor, Original Score, Direction, and Writing.

Tom Hollander deserved a nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

Shame on the detestable Academy Awards which not only continuously overlook brilliant cinematic performances, but also continuously create rules that disqualify hundreds of brilliant, masterpiece performances from receiving nominations.

reply

Definitely. I rented this movie thinking it would be mediocre. I was, quite simply, blown away by Johnny's Wilmot. I was completely sucked into this character, so much so that it shocked me. I thought it would be a vacuous performance of a vacuous pervert but I hated him, loved him, pitied him, adored him, understood him, fell in love along with him. I have long been a JD fan but I do think this is his best work. This character did what all great characters do -- he moved me. Maybe I should re-phrase that....it was more than the character he played, it was Depp's performance, his interpretation of Wilmot.

Bravo!

I doubt Depp will get nominated for an award in the US...like Quills, this is much too perverse for most Americans. I thought this movie was better than Quills though.

reply

Yes, but he probably won't get it for this role. I was blown away with his performance in this film. He was fantastic

reply

In a word: Yes.

But it was made in 2004, so I think it's too late now. I think it's a travesty that he wasn't nominated for an oscar for this. He's superb in it.

Doesn't matter when it was made. Matters when it was released in the US. Wasn't it February 2006? Anyway, the Academy is full of useless politicians who engage in nominating based on popularity and mainstream performances or themes. Screw the Academy. If I were an actor I wouldn't want their meaningless awards (of course, it's hard to say how I would really feel if I were an actor). Consider some recent Oscar winners--did they really deserve their awards? Weren't there better or more deserving actors/films than those that won in almost every category?

reply

...Sometime I really wonder how they go about picking what movies or actors fall into each category...some I can understand for this year such as...of course Johnny Depp for best comedy actor for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest and Leonardo DiCaprio for Blood Diamond. Borat being nominated?...aren't people filing complaints about the movie...yeah I don't think he deserves one...I mean that is the most obsurd thing I have ever heard of. This movie deserves an oscar, but I can name a bunch of movies that are nominated that should be in it's place...I have to go with Blood Diamond...it is honestly one of the most moving films I have ever seen...I felt every emotion when watching that recently. I know this isn't the Blood Diamond message board...but it just shows that they have no standards in the way they pick what movies go under each category...and it is completely unfair...I mean Johnny is still up for an award...but I'm sure Borat will win best comedy actor for Borat!...which I really don't think he deserves because Johnny has been knock off many times and he really deserves it...for this movie and for Pirates...well for pretty much almost every movie he has been in!

Is you crazy? Have you ever seen funky, nasty porn nominated for an Oscar?

Oooops - excuse me - Halle Berry did win for Monster -- my bad...

Thats exactly how they will see it.

Unfortunately a little sexual content takes away from the amazing performances. I thought this movie was great. Definitely moving. Its a movie that leaves you in your seat, with your eyes open gazing at it in utter amazement at the brilliance of it all. I know thats what I was like.

Screw the bias politics of the awards. We need a better awards ceremony.

reply

I think that is he won an oscar for POTC then he definitley deserves an oscar for this. His acting here was stunning, his best work ever.

i agree its such remarkable acting, and truly deserved the Oscar.. I cant even remember who won best actor that year, butI suspect the comparison would be infuriating to make

reply

Yes...Johnny Depp definately deserved the Best Actor Oscar for this film. He is absolutely amazing in this movie. This movie deserved the Oscar for best film as well as Best soundtrack, Best Costume and best directing. Its truly THAT amazing.

I really love Michael Nyman's soundtrack too. I think I must love his soundtracks generally as "The Piano" was a film I saw when I was young (probably a little too young to be watching it secretively in fact although it was innocently unintentional) which left a big impression on me. Though I guess you might expect that the music would leave an impression in that film. But yeah, I love the score for The Libertine.

Anyway, Oscars. I just wish this film had gotten any critical acclaim. It was rather poorly received by many critics as well as I recall (apart from Depp's performance in most cases). Interestingly, when I have seen it scheduled to be shown on TV more recently the reviews have always been far more flattering and have often noted that it should not have been overlooked the way it was.

Awards don't bother me all that much, but about the Oscar, I feel it likely that Depp will get one one day and personally I hope it will be for his best performance to whatever date it comes, rather than as a "he deserves it as he has done so many good performances" award. Not that that doesn't have some validity too. And I have to say I personally can't imagine how he could top this performance myself. Though he can always surprise. But this is so special that I wish it had gotten an Oscar, yes. But ah well.
