Johnny Depp's amazing performance ......

I guess there aren't many people who have seen this. I've seen it a few times after catching it in the theater.

Great performances. I also love the movie Quills. It's a similar story in a way. I don't think many people have see Quills either.

Both films are worth watching.

Whenever I see Depp criticised I point people to The Libertine. Hell of a shame that the movie flopped, as Depp's performance is excellent.

Launlori,
I agree,I don't think too many people have ever even heard of this movie.
This movie was under-rated.

S.Morton's performance was amazing.
Johnny Depp blew me away.
John Malkovich, of course, was great as ever.He never disappoints

PS: I saw Quills too, and that was another movie that I enjoyed,--- and once again, not too many people saw that one too.

PS: Also, if you liked this movie and also Quills, then check out these movies too:

RESTORATION, (1995), with Robert Downey Jr.

AND...

VATEL (2000), with Uma Thurman.

I've seen both Restoration and Vatel. Both again underrated films.

I'm a huge fan of costume dramas. I usually end up watching a lot of European/British films as they are superior to American films.

They don't rely on special effects to hide the lack of a good script. They are usually solely reliant on the script .... Character developement, story, backstory ... Etc.

Right now I'm watching Poldark. If you haven't seen it. I highly recommend it.

I've not seen POLDARK, will ck it out. TXS.

Also, have you seen Vanity Fair with Reese Witherspoon? That movie was really such fun to watch....entertaining, and probably one of Reese's best!

I just hope those folks who'd love this film will find it in their own time. 

The board also used to be busier. Sad that they've deleted all the old threads. Ah well I suppose. It has been some time since I watched now... I must again. And yes, I think this is easily Depp's greatest performance.

Yup, Depp has turned into a caricature of himself recently, but he definitely delivered amazing performances in his career. Ed Wood, Jack Sparrow, Edward Scissorhands and Libertine.

Libertine is the most overlooked one obviously and funnily enough, it may be the best.

Depp is firing on all cylinders in the last third when Wilmot has syphilis. Quite an amazing performance. A shame it was in a such a so-so movie and that it is so overlooked.

Quills is a underrated gem, has a fantastic performance from Geoffrey Rush and anything where Michael Caine plays a bastard is worth a watch. Also Joaquin Phoenix is in it, deserves a watch.

I loved The Libertine, although it's a pretty damn depressing watch. But it probably has Depp's probably last great performance before he become a shadow of himself and started to over act.
