Worst Coming Out Movie EVER

This movie was so bad. Me and some of my girlfriends decided to have a night of lesbian movie watching. There are only so many gay flicks we've pretty much seen them all.

This movie was completly unnatural. Everything about it.

we were thinking we could make a drinking game for this move tho. Every time you hear a bad analogy or gay steroetype.. take a drink.

DONT waste your time. go watch ANY OTHER lesbian movie.

I thought it was alright. I'm not talkin about the acting or anything but just the fact that I'm closeted and somehow got anxious and more curious how it's like to be out after watching this film. I also have had that thought when Gray and Sam were in the elevator. It's just not easy [to come out the closet] to some and I do admire those that are out.

I have to say here that this movie gives hopes for parents that cant communicate with their kids, because they are a shame to tell them they are gay.If it opens the door to realize parent (most) ,just want them to be happy and how can you not love them you bore them and raised them, then im all for it because at the end of the day it doesnt matter who we love as long as we love.

just curious - how would her charater be more believable to you as a gay woman ?? being gay is an inward thing and not easily portrayed but just like in real life you take a persons word for it. just curious what would ahve made her more beleivable as a gay character ?

I have known numerous lesbians and I have to say that Heather Graham is in no way like any lesbians I've seen (let alone most straight women I've seen). She looks like a woman from make-believe lesbian stories where it's all romantisized and sexed-up supremely for male viewers. I think the story is fun but I am not a big fan of Heather Graham. She's so faky; she only reinforces the idea that women (who like men) are expected to look like porn stars. And, by being in this movie, she reinforces the sexy girl-on-girl action. Gay female characters in most films are portrayed as two women with rocking bodies "gettin' it on."

Why can't films portray people, all people, realistically in the way they look too? Most women no matter what their orientation do not look like porn stars and love is not just based upon sex only. Attraction is the kick off--what begins the race; what makes two people stay in love is stamina and the drive to stick it out to the finish because you want nothing more than to finish the race (or to spend your life with the person you love most).

I'm sick of these hardcore lesbians thinking they are the only types of lesbians in the world. Guess what, my friend is lesbian and very feminine. Now she's been out a while and she's still very feminine but that said as she has become more clear of her sexuality, she doesn't the play the little games with men anymore. But when she was just figuring herself out she did.

STFU. Everybody isn't sobbing and cut up when they come out. Some people are older when they come out and not 10. I'm sick of you!

reply

Sooo would you have rather had her dressed in leather and rode a motorcycle, as well as sporting a mullet?

reply

I'm not gay but I totally agree. This movie just sucked. There was nothing redeeming about it.

reply

Neither am I, but two of my best friends are...I found this movie to completely offensive not just to gay people -- but to humanity in general. The dialogue was so unnatural and forced that I found myself wondering if the writer had ever actually met humans before -- or just copied dialogue from tripe dramas on the defunct WB network. This was easily the worst movie I have seen this year & I saw Norbit!!!

.....Or My Name Ain't Nathan Arizona

reply

Predictable? Yes. Cliched? Yes. Offensive? NOT to this lesbian. It doesn't even have to appeal to everyone. Worst movie ever? NO WAY!! I have seen worse movies, old and new, in genres and sexual orientation across the board. Not every "coming out" movie needs to be angst driven, grroundbreaking, or even politically correct.

Sometimes it hits and sometimes it misses, but one reply in this thread got a moment of relief from a closeted existance. Isn't that worth it?

I'm happy that over the last 25 years movies with lesbians don't have to end as "The Children's Hour" (really good film, predictable ending for the time, made some want to back up so far in the closet their butt cheeks left permanent indentations in the wall...).

I'm not saying it is a "great movie for all time". It's just a little romantic comedy. It's cute. Take it for what it is...and don't hold it to some artifically high standard simply because a character comes out. It's okay to have a little feel-good without creating a cultural flagship of perfected group representation.

yeah. i agree with what u said. it baffles me that there's so many threads saying that the movie sucked. i just watched it, and i thought it was very wonderful. i love Sam and Gray's relationship. i wish me and my sisters are like that.

everything about the movie screams a happily ever after tone - which i really like.

right on. i picked up the movie not even knowing that it's a lesbian-flick, and only knowing that it looks like a nice romantic comedy. a genre which i totally love, and i think this movie has done itself well. i loved it.

Agreed.
I thought it was a typical romantic comedy. I found it pretty funny and cute. No more crappy than most other romantic comedies out there. Seems to me that just because it was a "lesbian" movie it's getting a sh*t ton more flap

the movie was alright. i was disappointed about the ending of course. i felt they could had went into better detail with the Grey character and most of all the Charlie character. everything was predictable and rushed. it had it's funny moments and i loved Gordy. outside of that, it was decent picture.

reply

Totally agree. I just saw this movie and really enjoyed watching it. I've seen way more horrible movies and this was good and I can totally relate with what Gray is going through too.

reply

Very well put and excellent point re: mentioning "The Children's Hour."

reply

Just to tack on to this:

Not to mention people saying it had bad dialog. Come on people. That scene in the elevator was pitch perfect. Is there a single gay person who didn't have those exact words cross their mind when first coming out? I know I did!

reply

I wouldn't say it was the worst movie EVER. I mean, that's a really big statement. I've seen pretty worse movies -- and this one at least was entertaining. I'll agree with you that it was unnatural, very much so -- Gray's attraction to Charlie was overplayed and out of nowhere, and Heather Graham was plain bad (except for the pre-Charlie scenes and the last two minutes, in which she was adorable), but it had lovely photography and music and Rachel Shelley (best thing of the movie, if you ask me) and, well, while I wouldn't recommend it I wouldn't tell people not to watch it, because it wasn't a waste of time for me -- it didn't bore me to death, and it cheered me up a bit.

In general, I simply dislike a lot of romantic comedies. Not all of them, but most. The thing is that in all romantic comedies the plot it pretty much: Lover #1 likes Lover #2. Love occurs. Silly side character makes fool of himself/herself. Insert contrived dialog *here*. Then the producers just come up with a twist to overlap the easy, predictable format, and have all the dialog be about that. So in brief a romantic comedy about gay romance is just going to be contrived dialog about being gay. (which sort of sums up this movie)But I have seen worse romantic comedies about gay romance. All of which just spent the whole movie leaning on the fact that they were being controversial (sort of) and not nearly enough time leaning on good writing and/or good acting. I wish someone would make a gay romantic comedy that wasn't all about the fact that the main character happened to be gay. And instead revolved around they're specific plot. I mean there aren't any romantic comedies where the whole movie is just some cute movie-star talking about how neat and inspirational being straight is! I just wish these people would get over themselves and make good movies as opposed to novel ones.

I'm sick of following my dreams I'm just gonna ask where they're going and hook up with 'em later.

Mitch Hedberg rocks.

The movie was a light-hearted fun film, not really a serious "coming out" flick.
That was nice, because "coming out" movies are generally boring, unrealistic and irrelevant. Who cares about someone's "coming out" problems? If you're in the closet, please stay there and enjoy your life to the fullest. You certainly don't need anyone's approval to exercise your libido in the most fulfilling manner to yourself, but keep it to yourself...WE DON'T CARE.
As to the movie, it was cute and Heather Graham is a real sweetheart and an under-rated situation comedy actress. Her scenes with Allan Cummings were heart-warming.

Lesbian scenes are like pizza. Even when it's bad, it's still pretty good.

You smell like beef and cheese, you don't smell like Santa.
