agreed. thought it cheapened the whole thing.

Sorry, what does OTT mean?

reply

I quite liked the score.
I didn't think it was that 'Over The Top'.

Did anyone else notice the freakish similarity of the score in parts to the score of Hitchcock's 'Psycho'?

Man, I'll tell you, some moments (the slow, even, dissonant violins in high register) are SO similar to Herrmann's famous Psycho score I wouldn't be surprised to learn that they're actual musical quotes.

Here's why this similarity is freaky to me ~ someone in another thread posted this about the ending to 'Enduring Love' (SPOILERS for both films):

"After the first few titles in the closing credits we see what appears to be an asylum/hospital setting and Jed is there ... writing if I recall correctly ... and he turns to face the camera with a creepy smile on his face."

That describes the ending to 'Psycho' exactly!

Why these subtle (but rather specific) references to the Hitchcock film?

I'm with big hughezy - the music really got in the way.

It was an unusual score. Beautiful at times. There was only one scene where it was OTT, and that was when Joe was running.

I loved the score. Reminded me of a film from the 40's or 50's.

I watched it last night as well, but didn't think it was that brilliant. I did like it but gave it a 7, and that was quite generous of me... Besides, I know there's a book, so many people who have read it, were probably disappointed with the adaptation.

Roux: Very good... but not my favorite.

I also recognised the score as being quite hitchcockian, as was the story. Hitchcock always had the best scores, i thought it was great.

The Machinist is also a bit of a tribute to hitchcock in almost every respect.

I was going to post the same thing. It was distracting as all hell.

It's funny because in the opening balloon scene I commented on how effective it was to have no music whatsoever (there were a few moments of ambient sounds).

Then there were a couple of scenes that were supposed to be intense or desperate yet the music was SOOOOOO OTT that I had to laugh and turn it down.
