reply

the films that i hav mentioned are those which hav had a lasting impression on me.. i did feel that in black, michelle comes up in life in spite of all the obstacles that she faces.. if u note i hav 3 to 4 comedy movies in my top 10(or shud i say top 13 list)... i feel laughter is the best medicine and each time i watch munnabhai i just cant seem to get enuf of it(seen it 4 times).. hey but i respect ur opinions.. i wont start bashing ur choices..

reply

This ones for Gokul,

So you feel that laughter is the best medicine huh?? Do you realize that this is the exact same silly dialog in the movie "munna bhai-mbbs"?. lol. So the movie has had such a long-lasting impression on you, that you have sub-consciously started to quote dialog's from it???? You must be very easy to manipulate. Please take that *beep* movie out of your top 13 list. And I cannot believe the fact that you did not add "Sholay", or "Deewaar" or similar movies to your list. This shows that you relish the act of watching third-class conventional movies, and this also shows that you lack the ability to "judge" how good a movie is.

Funny how you go about bashing someone's taste when you yourself are stuck in the same rut as he is.. But I considered giving you a chance and see what you had to offer. Considering how low you considered Gokul's 'taste' to be, I was expecting some truly aesthetic stuff. Like Satyajit Rai's Apu Trilogy. Or some other seminal classic like that. But you're as mainstream as Gokul is, buddy. Saathiya? Yes Boss?

Good movies, but not any better than anyone else's list. And I'd go with Gokul's taste on this one. Any list that has Dil Chahta Hai gets my vote!

By the way, I'd add Swades in there too. Best Indian movie I've seen in a while.

Seeing that you've already bashed Munna Bhai twice on this board, I'm guessing that your main gripe with Gokul's list is that MBBS is in it. I don't feel the need to defend the film, as that would be like explaining to a two-year-old why it is very important to use condoms before sex (it's beyond him, in case you didn't get the analogy). Suffice it to say that anyone who doesn't understand the phrase "to each his own" needs to learn a thing or two about tolerance.

Sorry, I told you I won't defend it, but I couldn't help it. The only similarity between MBBS and Patch Adams is that both are about the use of laughter as a medicinal tool. But where Patch Adams was maudlin and insipid, MBBS felt fresh and zippy. It also boasts the indispensable performances of Arshad Warsi and Boman Irani. Patch Adams was a "feel good" movie in the worst sense, but MBBS did not drown itself in syrupy schmaltz. And besides, any movie that makes a game of carrom board seem like an edge-of-your-seat thrill ride gets points for originality.

reply

o comeon guyz it's a message board not bash board.and i feel ardhasatya and maqbool should be included(atleast in top 13:))

reply

my choices are very commerical; i guess.
and they're probably based on an actor/actress who impressed me alot.

1. kuch kuch hota hai [ first east indian movie i saw; and i was 6; and i cried]
xD
2. saathiya [ this was a break for the lame movies;]
3. risthey [only because Shilpa Shetty was sunning; the saving grace of it all]
4. shakti [i love karishma's acting in this movie]
5. Karan Arjun; one of my favorite Kajol movie

i can't continue;
gah
too early for me..
-.-'

but hum...
usually if it has
Kajol in it; i love it

reply

look you hate mbbs...thats fine...but don't go putting others down for liking it. it's their taste, different from yours. the world isn't in black and white. its not like everything 'ci03mak' likes is right and everything 'ci03mak' hates is wrong. people like you piss me off. and even though i don't have a top 10,.. the movies i like include...lagaan, DCH, mangal pandey and black, i don't know many old movies cos i've just gotten into hindi movies (the first film being KKHH) but i have seen sholay. and seriously tell me...whats so good about it?

Well, not considering any regional language good films in Bengali or Malayalam, I will certainly include 'Saransh', 'Black', and 'Mirch Masala' as the top Hindi films.

In Bengali i will like to mention films like 'Titli', 'Agantuk' and 'Nayak'.

reply

I haven't seen many Indian movies yet (about ten so far), but my favourite movie is the 1955 version of Devdas. Brilliant movie.

Like to add one more movie to the list:
Gangajal
Any comments?

I'm a complete newbie on Bollywood films, I haven't even seen 10.

I hope to see some good ones in the future, so your top 10 lists are really helpful in choosing the best!

You (sriksp) and Palaria have the best list so far.

Considering this list is Bollywood only, here is my list:

1 Anand - I can never have enough of this Hrisihikesh Mukharjee classic
2 Khamoshi (1969) - what should I say.. this Asit Sen masterpiece always brings me tears
3 Mughal-E-Azam - Inspite of being B&W, K Asif's original epic is better than the remastered one.
4 Jaane Bhi Do Yaron - Number one comedy, a brilliant satire by Kundan Shah
5 Bandini - Bimal Roy's superb Nutan starer is another one the makes me cry
6 Sholay - Ramesh Sippy's complete movie, you can never have enough of this one too. My fav even though it is a copy of 3 western movies
7 Andaz Apna Apna - Number two comedy, Rajkumar Santoshi's brilliant parody of all Hindi movies ever made.
8 Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa - Another Kundan Shah movie - Sharukhs best movie
9 Shatranj Ke Khiladi - Satyajit Ray's only Hindi Direction, Munshi Premchand's story, Sanjeev Kumar's acting what more can you want.
10 Guide - Vijay Anand's best movie
11 Silsila - Probably Deewar, Lamhe or Kabhi Kabhi are some of his best movies but for me this is best of Yash Chopra's movies
12 Koshish - A brilliant movie by Gulzar about a deaf and dumb couple (Sanjeev Kumar and Java Bhaduri) Gulzar's Aandhi, Mausam and Angoor are good too.
12 Swades - Ashutosh Gowariker's Swades touched moe more than Lagan ever could
13 Dil Se... - Mani Ratnam's first Hindi movie
14 Naam - Mahesh Bhatt (when he used to make good movies) made this wonderful movie about drugs & crime though Daddy and Arth are some of his more critically acclaimed movies.
15 Hum Aapke Hain Kaun - Sooraj Brajatiya's HAHK is not a brilliant movie, but it was a bold move to make something like it. In honour of all the stupid family movies that came after this one.

My list lacks Raj Kapoor and Guru Dutt movies, it does not have Mother India. The problem is I have not had the chance to see those movies since I grew up, as a Kid I could not fully appreciate them.
