Best character?

Coach Lyles! Feel free to disagree, but Sasha Roiz far outshone all the other actors, in my opinion, and was sorely underused!

Just in case you're wondering, me being a girl and all, yeah, I do think he's cute LOL But that has nothing to do with it, honest...

Coach George came a close 2nd, btw.

I like my secrets. They're secret.

Leon Taylor, without a shadow of a doubt! You could totally sympathize with all the crap he had to keep taking from Wilbanks.

There can't be a favourite...the brilliance of this show was that there was something appealing in every character:

Leon Taylor evoked empathy/sympathy - we all would act like him in his position.

Demitrius 'D.H.' Harris was the guy that everyone aspires to be - fearless, popular, ''the man'', albeit flawed....

Derek McConnell was the pretender to this throne - the QB, and (therefore) to some extent the leader of the pack, the guy who gets the girls...and the joker.

Eric Olczyk was in a constant psychological war, and I for one knows how he feels, and believe that we've all been in a similar position at some time...

Coach George and Kelvin 'Buffalo' James were torn between health and career, life and the sport they love...God Forbid I'm ever stuck in that 'Rock and Hard Place' scenario...

Thaddeus Guerwitcz had personal issues, and had to deal with outright bigotry because of his sexual life...

That's why I (a British viewer) loved, LOVE, and will miss 'PLAYMAKERS' - the story was great, the semi-narrative style of the show was a brilliant way to convey this story, and every character, a 'good guy' or a 'bad guy' evoked a reaction (the whole purpose of a TV/Film character)...

R.I.P. 'PLAYMAKERS' - A brilliant show destroyed.

I thought Olczyk was the best character, although I also thought Gurwicz was interesting, and I thought D.H. could be hilarious at times.
I thought it would have been a better ending to the season if they would have had the Wide Receiver starting in place of the pro-bowl bound Gurwicz, drop the winning touchdown pass, seeing as Gurwicz never dropped a pass thrown his way, thus preventing the team from making the playoffs, that would have been perfect irony, and poetic justice.

Has anyone else noticed that Marshall Faulk had begun to resemble Leon this season, seeming to lose a step?

reply

My favorite character was the black offensive lineman. He seemed to be a good person who tried to do the right thing, and played hard on the field. I loved his quote before the team took the field, "a wise man once said... we're gonna kick some a$$ today!!!" Funny guy.

The gay dude was a bad character. No, not because he was gay. It was because he was a white, geeky, non-athletic guy and we were supposed to believe that he was an all-pro wide receiver? Give me a break!

reply

Derek McConnell, Owner Wilbanks. and Coach George. I guess one poster forgot about Fred Belitnikoff. Raymond Berry was great, and Ed McCaffery wasn't bad. It's still possible for a Caucasian to make All-Pro as a wide receiver.

Wilbanks was a clever politician. "Worked for Piazza" was classic. I wouldn't be surprised if he manipulated Channel 12's firing of Leon Taylor in the last episode.

How could Leon Taylor complain about somebody getting a three year extension for 12 million when he, himself, was making 4.5 million (Wilbanks mentioned Taylor's salary in the Outing episode).

The ending didn't need to be changed. It took a lot of nerve for the writers to end the series badly for everybody. The clever part about the ending is that it could have been tweaked if the series was renewed.

Leon's great last quarter performance could have warranted a one year extension for the veteran's minimum. Wilbanks, who might have dismissed the Cougars playoff ouster as a fluke, could have had a change in heart and extended Coach George's contract. However, it was obvious that Wilbanks favored Coach Lyle.

The writers did a good job but there were inconsistencies? How could Eric and Taylor be long time teammates when the Cougars franchise was only two years old?

I know Leon Taylor was injured the previous season, but (excluding Jacksonville and Carolina) most expansion teams are dreadful. You'd think the Cougars would have too many weak spots to afford the luxury of drafting a running back with the 10th pick of the draft. Especially, since it appeared that Taylor's statistcs would have pro-rated to an near 1600 yard season. Taylor appeared to be a verson of Ronnie Harmon, the former University of Iowa running back in the mid-1980s.

However, I had to hand it to Wilbanks. D.H. was a big play back for the Cougars.

If Terrell Owens had watched PLAYMAKERS you better believe we would have seen the Superman and flip celebrations during the 2004 NFL season.

How many people noticed that Robin hit Leon first in the domestic violence episode? How could Robin be so dense, she couldn't understand that Leon had to discuss the trade rumor with Samantha first. Samantha, a Cougars beat reporter, heard the news first.

Chambers was also a good character.

reply

Hahaha. Expansion teams suck. They would never make it to the playoffs let alone the Super Bowl right? Carolina would never get there. Even if they lost. They would NEVER get there.

Get your head out of your ass acting like you know what the hell you are talking about in your long ass comment. You're wrong. Just accept it and move on.

Chambers was a great character. Does anyone else think that he started dating (or would have) the girl from his hometown that McConnell got pregnant? My other two faves were D.H., man it was almost impossible to not like him, even when he ganked that sick kids meds; and I thought Thad Guerritz (?) was pretty cool, too.

Oh, has anyone given "Guard Dog" and love? Then again, bigots don't really need any praise.

"That's why I don't kiss 'em on the mouth." Dating advice from Jayne Cobb.

the receiver is my favorite. He's gay, he's not, who cares? Dude laid out on the field and took everyone's (stuff). The one i couldn't stand at all was Leon's wife. Yes, she hit him first a few times. He was trying to get her off of him. Did he do it too hard? I don't think so, but I know there is reasonable argument. Still, I'd knocked her out. Especially after how hard she milked the, "injury". I mean come on! I haven't seen a girl play up to the camera like that since Meryill Streep. I was cheering after her dumb (butt) told the lady at the hospital what happened and Leon told her, "Keep on talking. All people are going to remember about me is I beat my wife. All people will remember about you is you were a victim."

reply

I agree, that whole story about how the Leon Taylor character "beat" his wife was so over the top, I couldn't believe it. Maybe I'm blind, but it looked more like a swipe than a deliberate push to me. If they hadn't been at the top of the stairs, the wife wouldn't even have landed on her butt.

They were both out of control and they acknowledged it.

My favorite character was reporter Samantha Lovett because Thea Andrews is hot and that was another crime ESPN committed. Cancelling Playmakers and then kicking her off the morning show, Cold Pizza.

reply

My self being a lineman (only highschool) i can somewhat relate to Buffalo. What i really like is that bond he has with the guys he has to protect i.e. Derek and D.H. he is very loyal, but he has to deal with his health, which i know about, i pretty got the same diagnosis about diabeates, lose the weight or get diabeates. But there all good characters that bring something to the table

reply

DH was my favorite.

I think they underutilized Lyles and Samantha.
