A Contradiction

One thing I don't understand about movies like this is how a ghost can pass through a wall as an ethereal presence but then has enough force to throw a punch or otherwise physically assault someone. Isn't that a contradiction? When a person is attacked why doesn't the spectre pass through them?

I know your question is a couple of years old, but I thought I'd share something with you. Remember the movie "Ghost"? When the subway ghost "teaches" Sam how to concentrate and use his power to move the can? Before that, he was just 'passing through' things and people, too. I think the movie makers use what they need...either ethereal or solid presence...for their ghosts. Remember the old "Topper" movies?  The ghosts could drive a car! Movie makers have been doing this for some time. And it is a bit of a contradiction.
