Good for you dating an African-American

I swear I had a weird feeling in my stomach when she said that

Namaste, and good luck.

Oh me too. I thought it was a real heavy handed clunker of a line.

Yeah that's true. That's just what a woman like her would say. It's uncomfortable to hear, but I like that Shyer put it in the movie.

Did I miss something..when and who said that in the movie?! I don't remember that!

I'm African-American, and I cracked up when she said it, because she clearly didn't mean it in a nasty or racist way---she meant well by it. That's why it was funny how she said it---plus she was giving them the thumbs-up since she thought that they were together, lol.

No, i liked that she said that b/c also of the way she said it. She said it kinda jokingly with a wink and a thumbs-up (if i recall correctly). And Alfie just laughed it off and kinda rolled his eyes at her. I mean, she's an older white woman with a big/loud mouth so to have her pretending that it was no biggie to see Alfie and Lonette whispering together, would've been stupid and unrealistic.

My girlfriend is black and i'm white so i have no problem with interracial relationships. But i have to defend the old lady. I honestly think she had good intentions, don't think she ment anything nasty by it.

I'm a black girl and I actually thought it was funny when she said it.

I don't think she said it to cause any harm or offense. I think something like that could happen in real life. I'm pretty sure it has.

You're right. I can imagine many older people saying that and not intending to be offensive.

She was a nice lady. I'm positive that what she meant was approval. Remember, in her time (I estimate her to be near 70) whites and blacks dating was a definite taboo. I got the impression from her that she grew up used to it being a bad thing and approved or came to accept it herself as things changed. In either case, she would remember all the violence and hatred from the days when it was widely considered wrong, and approve of Alfie's "open-mindedness". She would probably see it as an act of bravery, maybe not realizing how our generation mostly views interracial relationships as perfectly normal.
