A movie of Jones and Augusta without Clifford Roberts is flawed.

I have not seen the film. I did, though, read the credits here on IMDB. Clifford Roberts was not mentioned.
That's very disappointing because if not for Roberts, Augusta National would not have come about as it did.
CR was a broker for then Payne Webber in New York. He had all the connections to the 'big money' during the depression. It was him who corralled the Vanderbilts and Rockefellers onto trains down to Georgia to invest in Bobby Jones' club.
Bobby Jones was, of course, #1 to Augusta National. Clifford Robers was #1a.
The sad tale is Mr. Roberts committed suicide and is buried "somewhere" on the grounds.

I saw the movie and because the creation of the Agusta National didn't occur until later in Bobby's life it's not a big focus of the movie. The timeline of the movie is more during his life as a child growing up and when he won the grand slam. The movie is not about the Agusta National but about Bobby Jones and I would encourage anyone and everyone to go see this movie. Bobby Jones was a rare and awesome man who played golf because he loved it. He understood that, "once you play for money, you can't call it love anymore."

In fact, it was at the end of the movie when Bobby Jones took O.B. Keeler to a field and told him about his dream of Augusta National. So there was no need for Clifford Roberts in the story

reply

Yes, and they should have mentioned Gus Horowitz too!

Anyone who was at Augusta during this era got rare words of wisdom from old Gus when he cleaned their spikes in the Club House.

I'm surprised to learn that Clifford Roberts is buried on the grounds. I recall a furor a few years back when someone tried to sell the gun he killed himself with.

Catholics will not allow a burial of a suicide on consecrated ground. Perhaps Mr. Roberts' church felt the same way?

If the story is supposed to focus on his winning the Grand Slam and then retiring, that would have ended the story in the early 30s before Augusta National was built (1934?).

reply

wow, I didnt even think about that. Good point. you looking forward to seein it?

Clifford Roberts was cremated and his ashes were scattered in Ike's Pond where he enjoyed fishing and perhaps scattered amongst the rest of the course.

Now, here's the real question the people in Georgia keep ducking out of embarrassment:

Why did the Bobby Jones estate allow the producers of the Bobby Jones "movie" to so overtly steal the same title from the TITANIC THOMPSON book, "TITANIC THOMPSON:STROKE OF GENIUS?"

See the book cover at: http://www.TitanicThompson.com

The Titanic Thompson book was published about three years earlier than the BJ movie...in 2001.

Isn't this a bit beneath the legacy of Bobby Jones? Or, maybe not.

And also, of what are they so afraid?

Perhaps, if the copyright holder for "Titanic Thompson: Stroke of Genius" is worried about copyright infringement, they should take action. Otherwise why do you care?

Titles cannot be copyrighted. This is why Ray Bradbury couldn't sue Michael Moore for Fahrenheit 9/11.

Why does this get your panties in such a knot??? It's a title that got reused ... whatever!

Augusta national IS hollowed ground...to golfers such as myself

Perhaps you should watch the movie before you comment. The plot takes Jones's life through the Grand Slam to the point where he has selected the land for Augusta National. It does not go beyond that so there is no need to have someone play Clifford Roberts.
